Doorbell - notifications when not at home

DublinDoorbell

Hi there,

I was planning to purchase a doorbell to help manage deliveries etc while not at home, but spotted somewhere in an FAQ that the phone “must be in same home as doorbell” to receive notifications - I couldn’t find clarification if this meant just in the same Google Home system, or actually requires phone to be in the physical location of the home?

Eg., if I am out of the home and a delivery arrives / doorbell is rung, will I get a notification and can I respond ie. “Leave on porch” / “side gate” etc?

Thanks.

Your phone does NOT have to be in the physical location of your home in order to receive notices. We regularly get notices of doorbell rings and other events when we are not at home.

The reference you saw is probably that in the Google Home app (or Google Nest app), your phone has to be connected to the same Google Nest "home/structure" as your doorbell or other camera.

One thing to note, however, is that when you are away from home and you get a notification that someone has rung your Google Nest doorbell, you may not get that notification in time to respond with "Leave on porch" while the delivery person is still standing at the door. The ads that Google Nest (and other video doorbell vendors) run about this process tend to exaggerate how fast it works.

Nonetheless, it is handy to get notices when you are not at home, so you can have a neighbor or friend grab the package, or head home to get it yourself.
