Floodlight camera doesn’t charge after rain

Trevino

My floodlight camera stops charging after rain. It’s mounted on ground floor of two story home, so it does get rained on, as opposed to my other nest cams that are mounted under eaves and never have an issue. I have to unmount and charge, I have never seen it wet, but terminals are discolored, which indicates rain is in fact getting in. How can I stop water from entering charge port? Is there some gasket that can purchased?

Hi Trevino,

Thanks for posting in the community!

I'm so sorry to hear that your Nest Cam with floodlight stopped changing after it rained. No worries; I'm here to help! Just to get started, I have a couple of questions that will allow me to understand this situation better and provide you with the best troubleshooting steps. Can you help me answer them?

  • Does the camera charge properly when it's not connected to the floodlight?
  • Is the camera working correctly on its own?
  • Are there any kinks or frays in the cable?
  • If you're comfortable, could you please share a photo of the discolored terminals (without the serial number)?

In the meantime, if you have more questions for me, feel free to reply to this post. I'll be happy to assist further!

Best regards,

Nery.

Yes, camera  charges fine off when charged off mount with an extra cable I have. Once charged and mounted back, and cable terminals and charging port are cleaned it works fine. No frays or kinks on cable. Unfortunately I’ve already cleaned the terminals to get me back up and running, just need a solution to prevent this from happening again. Thanks

Dear @Trevino

Thank you for reaching out to Google Nest Support. We understand the frustration of encountering charging issues with your floodlight camera after rain.

To address this, we recommend the following steps:

  • Waterproof Protection:
    • Consider purchasing a waterproof gasket specifically designed for electrical connectors.
    • If unavailable, you may use a waterproof sealant or adhesive rubber to create a custom gasket.
  • Cable Management:
    • Secure the cable to prevent movement and potential exposure of the charging port during rain.
    • Use a waterproof cable sleeve or conduit for added protection.
  • Camera Positioning:
    • Adjust the camera angle to minimize water exposure to the charging port.
    • Install a small overhang or shield to protect the camera from direct rain.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, if you've recently purchased your floodlight camera, it may still be under warranty. Please check your purchase details for warranty information.

We're here to help.

Sincerely,

Brandon.
