Gen 1 cameras work with Nest Aware?

vreiner

I have a number of Gen 1 Nest cameras (model A0033 or NC2100ES) using the Nest app with a Nest (not Google) account.  I don't currently have a subscription and want to get Nest Aware for recordings, but I've read lots of problems after migrating accounts from Nest to Google.  I don't mind setting things up again and not having a subscription there are no recordings to save.

* can I use my current cameras with Nest Aware?

* is there a reason I should not migrate my account?  I read that I cannot migrate back if I have problems.

* I read I can move cameras between the 2 apps (probably once I migrate my account?), but can't find how to do that.  Or is that old info and not valid any more?
* if I migrate my Nest account and have problems, I assume I can't create a new Nest account to move backwards?

thanks all!

Each 2nd gen "Nest Aware" and "Nest Aware Plus" subscription covers ALL 1st gen and 2nd gen Google Nest cameras and doorbells in the same Google Nest "home/structure" (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9681538).

We migrated our Nest Account to a Google Account in 2020 because the "Nest Aware Plus" subscription was cheaper than the 1st gen subscriptions; we were careful, and did not have any problems. The migration cannot be undone. See this Google Nest Help page; it's worth reading through: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9297676

We have not had any issues due to the migration, and we continue to use the Google Nest app. We do have a 2nd gen battery camera purchased 2-1/2 years ago that lacks many of the capabilities of our older Nest app cameras because it works only in the Google Home app. See this incomplete list of missing functionality: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/13038234#zippy=%2Cnest-app-only-features

In the beta "Public Preview" version of the Google Home app (which we are NOT using), it is now possible to "transfer" individual 1st gen cameras (not doorbells or IQ cameras) to this beta version of the Google Home app, and it is possible to "transfer" those individual cameras back to the Google Nest app if things don't work out. However, some customers have reported having problems with their transferred cameras.

If you migrate your Nest Account to a Google Account, you cannot create a new, non-gmail Nest Account and move backwards. New accounts for using the Nest app must now be Google Accounts: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/10503498

Thx for such an extensive answer! I googled a few answers but many were old and I didn’t know how people felt about the situation as it is today.

what did you mean when you said you “were careful” when you migrated? What precautions did you take?

@vreiner

You'll want to read the instructions and the video in the link I provided ahead of time.

You cannot migrate to a Google Account that is already being used for Google Nest products; see the "Error message: Google Account is already linked with another Nest account" topic in the link I provided for instructions in what you can do instead.

You'll want to follow the "Verify that you've migrated your Nest account to a Google Account" instructions in the link I provided.

As I said, it's worth reviewing the entire help topic.
