Google Doorbell (battery) stuck on downloading update

I had to factory reset my doorbell because it was sometimes sending a notification 5 minutes late (and sometimes not at all). Did the reset and removed it from the Home app. Set it up again, no problem there, however at the end of the install it starts an update and just stays stuck on “downloading update”. After a while it will say that there was a problem and when I select the doorbell in the Home app and try to continue the setup it just shows a blank page and all I can do is force close the app.

I know I’m not the only one with this issue, there are multiple posts on this forum detailing this exact problem as well. If anyone has a working solution that would be great, though even without a solution it would probably still be good to point out that, yes, this issue still exists and it’s basically bricking 200€ devices. Not a great show there Google. At this point i’m past my 30 days warranty so that’s money down the drain. Especially frustrating since the bell itself is great, just the software seems very poorly designed.

Just to update in case others run into this issue: after several days of trying I factory reset it once more and left the bell plugged in (aka charging) overnight. The following morning I tried again and it worked. Strangely enough there was no update screen, instead it went straight on to configuring the settings.

So it was either a download server/routing hiccup, or you need to let the thing do whatever it needs to do in the background overnight before you can set it up.

Now I’m getting a new issue which is that the bell disconnects and I get a notification. Unmounting and remounting fixed that, but so far it has not been a smooth experience at all.
