Google home (Battery)Camera

I have A Nest Cam (Battery) and it doesn't seem to be recording any night time activity.  The camera works as intended during the day, Picking up cars ,people, animals etc. but as soon as the sun sets, they stop recording. However I can get live video at night, just no recording. I have a wired camera in a window in front of my house it records cars going by all night looking west ,20 feet away I have the Battery cam over the driveway looking east it records nothing once it gets dark. I have everything in notifications turned on including (AUTO) on nigh vision. This camera is probably 30 feet from street.  I have the Nest Aware subscription and using the Home app on IOS to manage.   Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help. Joel.

Hi folks,

Joel62, thanks for posting and we appreciate your time in providing the Community the steps that resolved the issue with your camera that can’t record events at night time — it's a big help!

Fraa, I’m sorry to hear about your experience viewing your event history. Let’s see what’s going on — a few questions: do you have an Android or iPhone? Does your phone have a pending software update? Were there any changes to your Wi-Fi network? Also, is the camera connected to a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi network?

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Close all the apps running in the background of your phone, reopen the Google Home app. Then, check your event history again.
  2. At the highest video quality setting, your cameras can use a large chunk of the internet connection to stream video. Slower internet service might not be able to keep up. Check your internet speed here: https://goo.gle/2JaUmYI. The page would show your download speed then click “Show more info” to check your upload speed. Have a look at this article for your guide: Internet bandwidth and speed requirements for Nest cameras.
  3. Open the Home app Google Home app.
  4. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  5. At the top right, tap Settings .
  6. Choose Video.
  7. Under “Video quality,” choose Max or High.
    • High settings uses less bandwidth.
    • Max settings uses more bandwidth.
  8. Restart your phone, turn it off for 60 seconds then turn it on.
  9. If you have a dual band Wi-Fi frequency switch your connection to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to improve your connection.

Let me know how it goes.

I appreciate your help here, MplsCustomer and googuser1.

Thanks,

JT

I have an android. All this troubleshooting has been done. The google lies and rhetoric are getting extremely old now after 1.5 years of constant issues. **ANY PROSPECTIVE GOOGLE NEST BATTERY CAMERA BUYERS READING THIS TAKE HEED**
Read the complicated fix the so called specialist expects a user to perform. The fix is simple dont buy google nest battery cameras buy another brand. At least that way you'll have a product that works as advertised. Just to let the prospective buyers know all this and more has been performed multiple times over a 1.5 year span and the cameras still do not work. You will be here 1.5 years after purchasing the product asking the same questions receiving the same answers that dont work. Just buy another brand of camera.

@Joel62

Is your battery camera plugged in or running on battery power?

We have had the battery camera plugged in with the optional power cable for 19 months. With our Nest Aware Plus subscription, it records 24/7, but it seldom detects and flags events at night. Its nighttime detection of events is poor.

Mine is battery, no cord . Records throughout the day . stops recording at sunset . 😕

@Joel62

Our battery camera rarely detects events at night, but it records them because it's plugged in and we have a Nest Aware Plus subscription. If yours is performing like ours, but is running on battery power and therefore only recording detected events, that might explain what you're getting.

If we unplug our camera, so that it is running on battery power and is therefore normally in "Idle" mode, and then walk in front of the camera, it does not detect or record that as an event.

What is "wake up sensitivity " I have that set to high . Again the Battery camera record events all day and stops at sunset .

@Joel62

I believe it's supposed to make the camera wake up easier when it's in "Idle" mode.

I can't add anything more. I think our camera would do the same thing yours is doing if it were not plugged in.

Thank you . Joel

I have 7 battery cams. Night time event recording is sketchy and unless i dance around in front of them they wont activate to record events. I just wish i had read this forum before buying so many they're not fit for purpose at all.

Wow really that'd be awesome if you could pls. Ive had so many issues with mine ive lost count. At the moment i cant even use them at all.

It'd be good to know when/if google can get mine working again they were always sketchy at night time.

Worked with support at Google Nest yesterday and did the following setting changes on ALL phones accessing the Google Home app...

Go to Settings/Scroll down and Tap on Google Home/Turn all options OFF on ALL phones including the Location setting to Never/Get out of settings

Go back into Settings/Scroll down and Tap on Google Home/Turn all options ON for ALL phones including the Location setting to Always

Next in Settings go to Privacy & Security/Location Services/Scroll Down to Google Home/Set that to Always

This procedure fixed our issue and we are now recording immediately for nighttime events.
