Google nest doorbell (battery) Talk & Listen session echo

Jelmer_
Community Member

With a Talk & Listen session, the person at the door can hear himself echo when talking.

I have tested this and I can confirm that everything you say at the doorbell, echoes back with a massive delay making a conversation very awkward.

It looks that the technique on the Home app side fails to filter the incoming voice back to the microphone again.

Hey there, Jelmer_

Sorry for my late response. Thank you for all of your patience while waiting for a reply. I just wanted to make sure that your issue is addressed. Is your camera set up with any other devices? Is it meant to speak through a seperate speaker or anything like that? It it was going through another device first before coming to your phone that could be what that delay is. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Best Regards,

Brad.

Hi Brad, no problem, as you can see I'm not a fast replyer either.

My camera is a google nest doorbell (battery). The echo is experienced for the person communicating at the doorbell. He or she can here a loud echo of his/her own voice. I'm just using a galaxy S10, fully up to date with the session open from google home. So no other devices other then just the minimum required to do a fully qualified talk and listen session.

This is probably related to software because the voice volume from phone to doorbell is also very low. I have no issues with my microphone because, tested that and my calls are just going fine with sessions other then within google home / google doorbell session.

These must be new quirks from the nest -> home transition, the whole doorbell integration onto google home isn't a masterpiece experience yet unfortunately.

Hey folks,

I believe we are having the same issues with most of the newer Samsung Galaxy devices. We are still collecting information, so I will make sure that this feedback is recorded and sent forward. In the meantime, I am afraid I do not have a workaround. Just try your best to restart your devices and make sure that you are able to keep them connected. I hope there will be an update here soon. Please let me know if you need anything else.

Best Regards,

Brad.

What's odd is. After installing the Nest doorbell battery and discovering the issue, I did a search on the symptoms and found the same issue on the Nest Hello doorbell and samsung phones. This goes back more than a year ago and there was never a solution to the problem that I could find. It looks like this specific issue is with all Nest doorbell versions and Samsung phones. This issue should have been resolved a long time ago and should never have affected the new Nest doorbell battery model.

@dfleenor

We are definitely looking into this, but I am afraid I do not have any form of ETA to provide. I understand this is an inconvenience, so I hope that it can be resolved as soon as possible, but I do not know when. Keep restarting your device, factory reset them, do what you need to see if the issue is fixed. Make sure all of your apps and devices are up to date. Please let me know if you still need further assistance with this issue.

Brad.

This issue affects multiple generations of Samsung phones so no amount of rebooting or resetting is going to resolve the problem. It has something to do with how the microphone on the Samsung phone works with Nest doorbells.

I really don't get it why we would benefit of rebooting or resetting while already is established this is not an incident but a problem, google needs to address this problem and take responsibility for a 200 USD doorbell. Meanwhile, I don't reboot and reset if you don't mind, i have already put enough time into this issue. I'm seriously thinking about selling or scrapping this doorbell and look for alternatives.

Hey Brad, what happened to you? Over a month now and no additional feedback on what if anything Google is doing to fix this 100% reproducible problem.

i have blink cameras and Ring on the side of the house.  migrating to Alexa enabled devices is the apparent solution. i have half of my house with each system to test both before we went all in. google not fixing this issue is a deal breaker

It's been two weeks. Can you provide an update on what, if anything, is being done to resolve this problem with Samsung Galaxy Phones?

Hello, I have the same issue.

I tested the battery doorbell with 3 phones.

One pixel 5. Everything is ok.

2 Samsung phones. A A20e and a s10e. And I have the same issue as described by Jelmer : echo and low voice at the doorbell. So conversations are very difficult.

Samsung phones are up to date. And Google duo calls are ok on that phones.

Is there a software update on next days to fix that ?

I am also experiencing this exact problem with a Samsung S21 Ultra. The problem doesn't exist when we use my wife's iPhone 11 Pro. Surely thus can be fixed since it happens 100% of the ti.e with Samsung phones.

Same issue on my S21 Ultra and my husband’s S21. Extremely low volume. It appears the app is accessing the noise cancelation mic, not the primary microphone.

I know, we all know. I informed some media to give some attention to this problem because all they do here is advise you to reboot and or reset your system. Nobody from google is acknowledging this issue, it's ashame.

I have had this problem for two years.  Google is not going to fix it.  I participated in an online discussion for over a year.  Always was told they are working on it.  There were threads were they were telling people we are working on it from two years ago.  They shut down the online discussion so people could not post their frustrations.  They are aware of the problem and have no intention of fixing it.

Hello google support, when is the software going to be fixed for the whole samsung galaxy line?

i have the same issue. it's with a samsung s8. funny because the doorbell worksmfine with the ios phone in the house. the doorbell only has issues with android. Google support even told me "just use the ios device" what a joke

Did they? lmao... I have opened a official case ID yesterday, you should expect google to already know about this issue, but let's see what happens next.

   here is areply from them

The issue with the Doorbell echoing the voices has been mostly noticed in the fewer models of Samsung, the reason could be because of older version of Android, or the web app. This seems to be an emerging issue as of now, the issue will get resolved until that I request you to please use the Home or Nest app in an IOS device.

If you need any help I request you to reach back to us with the following case number.

For your reference your case number is 2-50880000xxxxxx If you need more help, you can contact us again and reference this case number or reply to this email to reopen your case.

Absolutely genius, my jaw hit the table. They (from google, developer of android) suggested to use iOS.

I also created a case, I'm anxious to receive the same reply. At least they acknowledge it is a emerging issue. Don't know what they are talking about with web app btw, I'm just using the google home app on Android, straight from the playstore, not aware of alternative ways.

Oh and I wouldn't call Android 11 old btw.

their problem is they had the Nest app for years and then migrated everything to the Home App but the doorbell runs on both which I'm sure has continuity issues

But the doorbell battery can't be managed by the old Nest app. You'll get notified to use the google home app.

got it.  Mine is hardwired.  One would think with the battery being the newest and using one app, it should be seamless. Half my house is Amazon Blink and Ring at the side door, the other half, upstairs is Google. I have run both just to see which integrates better before I go all in on one system. This might be a deal breaker
