I'm confused with why Presence sensing not fully working.

Community Member

So I've been using SmartThings for a while and now I'm slowly switching over to use  Google more for home automation.

have 4 SmartThings cameras in my home and I'm swapping them for the Google nest battery indoor/outdoor cameras. I currently have two google cams set up. To replace two SmartThings cameras. I also have the Nest Hub Max.

So with SmartThings....I get notified whenever I leave or enter the geofencing area. Never had a problem with it.  Since I want to use Google Home instead I'm switching over. The problem that I'm running into is that Presence Sensing doesn't seem to fully work...unless I manually set it.

I don't want to have to remember everyday to set my home to away. It kinda defeats the purpose of automatic.

For doesnt automatically switch over to away mode, but it will automatically switch back to home.

I've been working on this for a while and I just don't understand why it doesn't work for "away" but it works for "home".

Funny thing won't switch to "away" but some of the automations I have set up for "away" works. For example...I have it set to turn on my cameras and turn off my lights when I'm gone. It won't turn off any lights that are still on even though I have it set to turn all lights off....but it will turn on the's weird!

I've check the settings over and over. I've read many articles and still get the same results. I've uninstalled the home app. I've restarted my phone. I've closed the app and reopened it. I've disabled and re-enable presence sensing. I've adjusted my address several times. I've switched phones to use as location tracking. I have two phones (iPhone 13 pro max and Samsung S22 Ultra) I use my android for I switched to my iPhone and still get the same results. I'm really not sure where the issue is.

I also have my Samsung Tab S8 Ultra at home with Home setup I'm wondering if that is the issue?? I've had SmartThings on all 3 devices and I didn't have that issue as my android is the phone set for location I honestly don't think my tablet is the problem.

Just to summarize...the Google presence sensing isn't fully working. It doesn't automatically switch from "home" to "away". I have to manually set it. It does run some automations but not all when leaving. However it does switch from "away" to "home", and runs those automations.

I'm just not sure what to do at this point.

After reading more post about this Presence Sensing not person said that what he did to resolve his issue was by completely deleting the "home" within the Home App settings located at the bottom (in red). After that delete the app and then reinstall the app and set everything up again.

I'm not sure if deleting the app is necessary...but I did it anyways. I even restarted my phone...... again Im not sure if it was necessary.

After doing all that the Presence Sensing started working for me. So maybe it will work for you. Try it out.

Thanks and no problem....although I may not have dealt with it for a long time, it was still very annoying! I don't remember who suggested it but it definitely worked. I hope it helps for other.
