Nest Cam Extension Cables

Hey there!

We recently purchased a few nest cams and want them plugged in at all times. I ordered some HDMI cable extenders from Amazon and unfortunately they don't work. The lights just flash yellow/orange.

I read from a post from someone else here before that "Thanks for reaching out. You may use any compatible USB extension cable or you may get the Nest Cam (battery) Weatherproof Cable that is available in 16.4 ft (5 m) and 32.8 ft (10 m). If you’re interested in purchasing one, you may visit our Google Store website." - so my question is what is "any compatible cable"? I don't really want to purchase the outdoor weatherproof cables if possible as they are expensive and not necessary for indoor use.

I purchased a 10ft (3 metre) extension from Amazon about a year ago. I have it connected to Outdoor Camera with the cable run internally. It claims to be Outdoor/Indoor compatible.

The reason the Outdoor ones on Google Store are so expensive is due to them being made specifically for "Outdoor" material.

The one I have is exactly the same as the short, original cable just longer.

As for yours not working/flashing lights, this is due to your method of connecting. The lights mean the camera is not getting enough current/power.

The replacement/extension cables MUST be connected and used in conjunction with a suitable USB WALL PLUG.

Any USB Type A, 1 amp rated one will work. Lower Amp such as 0.5amp or cheap bundled adapters will give you same results as you are currently experiencing.

I'd recommend using an older Samsung phone charger plug or the one originally supplied with your Google Camera with above cable. That's how I have it.

Best wishes.

Hey Myke thanks for such helpful info!

I should have mentioned here that we have the original cable and plug for the wall - just with a HDMI extension in between. Do you think if I got a higher wattage cable it would then work? Or should I just bite the bullet and get the entirely new (but long- which is necessary) Google Nest Outdoor cable?

I think the main thing here is that we live in a tall and old building so sockets are hard to come by and ceilings are very high. With the cams situated in the corners of the ceilings above the doorways (out of plain sight), we need very long cables. Like 10m worth of cable before we reach a socket...

The issue you have is not the Google cable choice I suspect it is your HDMI integration. I doubt very much that it's that part of the connection not providing enough power.

You could buy the original cable from Google Store, however there are alternative listing's on Amazon (See Below)

The one from Google comes with a fixed plug adaptor at the mains end, where as Amazon's are USB Type A (Gives you a bit more flexibility, in my opinion) although similarly priced to Google Store, you would get it quicker (if you get a prime delivery) and chose your custom length. Where as G.S is set at 10m ONLY.

Hope this helps
