Nest Camera with floodlight sensor range

justinian

Hi folks,

I'm thinking of replacing my floodlight on the side corridor of my house with a Nest Cam with floodlight. But I want to make sure that the sensor will in fact pick up the motion, given it is a narrow path and the light would be at a bit of a height (I think around 15 feet). So traffic would be directly below the sensor as opposed to in front of it. Do you know if it will still detect motion directly below? The floodlight I currently have doesn't pick up that motion surprisingly, and so it doesn't turn on most of the time. I don't know if the direction of the sensor on this is adjustable? My current lights cannot be adjusted. No point to buy it if it won't work.

I appreciate your feedback!

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you are experiencing this, but I believe that activity zones will help you out in this situation. You can learn more about them here. I hope you find the article helpful!

Best regards,
Brad

Hi there,

Thanks for this! Just doing a quick read through that article. It says that setting activity zones will not change what your camera detects. I guess what I'm really trying to understand is if someone is walking directly beside or directly below, will the flood lights still turn on? Or do you need to be a certain degree angle in front of the camera? What's the range that the light will pick up? I'm more interested in the flood light than the camera, but certainly would like to know the range for both.

@justinian

Do you have an active Nest aware subscription? If so, you should be seeing those events depending on which event or motion detection you have turned on or off in your settings. If you do not have a Nest aware subscription, you can learn more about it here, and it will also go over how to subscribe.

Best regards,

Hi Brad,

I do have a Nest Aware subscription which I use for my doorbell and my Google home Max hub. To be clear though, I don't currently own a camera with floodlight, I'm debating whether to get one because my current flood light (not smart) doesn't have a wide enough angle on its sensor to pick up people walking up and down the side corridor next to my house. Hope that makes sense.

I hope that you make the switch! It's definitely a great addition to the Nest family, but I would suggest making sure that you check out the differences in a wired, vs. battery operated set up.

Brad

Hi there, yes actually I'm still trying to understand whether or not the flood light will turn on if I walk directly from the side or directly underneath without actually being in front of the sensor. That's what I need to know to understand if it will work in my side corridor. I don't know if there's an illustration or specifications somewhere that will show me the range of the sensor for the light?

Hi there,

Yes I think the first link pretty much told me what I need to know. 180° horizontal sensor for the flood light. Would be good to know from what height it can detect, but I'm hopeful it will still work. Thanks!

Floodlight:

  • 2 motion sensors
