Nest doorbell (battery) buffering and battery issues

MarkvDam

Hi all,

Monday I installed my Nest doorbell (battery) with the already installed wires (correct voltage). Unfortunately I’m having buffering issues while live streaming, like answering the door via the doorbell. Every 2-3 seconds the livestream needs to buffer, so I can’t hear and see the other person.

Besides, I see that the battery wil only last for 6 more days, while the doorbell is connected with wires…

Anyone has the solution or tips?

Buffering is likely WIFI related. Where is your router located? Hopefully not basement. Hopefully your router/mesh is up high and isn't hidden in some cabinet because it's considered unsightly.🙄  What is your signal strength where doorbell is installed? There are phone apps to help get an idea.  If signal strength is acceptable then your router/mesh possibly getting interference from neighbors (on same router channel, etc) or something in house or around router(metal/high voltage appliances). If you're unsure about what I just mentioned then time to cozy up to some YouTube videos.

Thanks for your reply! The modem is on the other side of the wall so it’s not the WiFi connection. Can it be something else, or related to the drainage of the battery?

It could still be a wifi issue if there is a lot of congestion in your area (and thus a lot of channel overlap).  The other factor would be your Internet connection.  When you're watching video (via the App or on a Google Assistant device), the video is coming via google's servers, so the video has to traverse out to their servers them back to your app/device - it's not done locally.  Is you Internet performance consistently good?  Check not only speed but latency and jitter as well.  The better speed tests will test all of these.

On the charging/battery issue, see this thread about cold weather performance.  Do you live in a cold climate?   I appears that the device only trickle charges. It doesn't run directly off of the doorbell A/C.   As a result of this, it can end up net negative on charging if events are high and/or  it's cold (0C and below, but can happen even at higher temps depending on amount of activity)

Hmm, I highly doubt it’s an WiFi/internet problem. There are only two other WiFi connection available and they are not on the same channel (3 and 8, I’m on 6). I did a Speedtest next to the doorbell and it’s all good (800 up/ 600 down).

any other possibilities?

Yeah, not sure.  It certainly could be some unique issue with your device, but it's unlikely.  I don't think any other cases of this have been reported here, on a casual look.  So when you say buffering, do you mean you're seeing a buffering notice/icon/symbol within the app, are you just seeing stuttering in the video itself?  That might help determine if it's the path from the doorbell device up to google's servers (which would be reflected as stuttering video), or the path from your viewing device up to google's servers.   Do recorded video clips show the same behavior?    What about if you watch a live stream, but one that you request, not when the doorbell is rung?

Hey there, folks.

Sorry to hear that you ran into this issue! I can imagine it's been quite frustrating to work around. To me, it sounds like it could be wifi connection related, but with those speeds it seems likely it's another issue entirely. Have you tried to restart your device? Have you tried to Factory Reset your device? That may help you out as inconvenient as the Factory Reset process is, it could help clear out these issues the next time. Learn how to Restart and Factory Reset your device here. Please let me know if you need further assistance!

Best Regards,

Brad.

I've got the same issue with my Nest doorbel on my phone (Oneplus 7T). The live video is lagging and goes offline after a few seconds. Both when the bell is rang and when accessing the live feed in the google home app.

The livestream works perfect on my girlfriends Iphone and on our Google nest Hubs. So it doesn't seem to be a WiFi issue but more likely the issue is in my phone.

Do you by any chance have a Oneplus phone?

Via another thread I just found out its most likely a OnePlus problem.

You can find a link to a reddit thread here where the solution is explained.

You need to turn off vibrant color effects in the phone screen settings.

This solved the problem for me!

Hi Gyszz,

Me and my wife both have an iPhone 11, but also my Google Hub is buffering every 2-3 seconds.

I tried a lot of thing to improve my WiFi, but I still highly doubt it is related to my internet…

its a shame Google isn’t responding to this message…

Hey folks.

It sounds like you may be having some wifi/connection/speed issues if you are having buffering problems. Try moving your wifi closer to your Nest Doorbell if you can. It may also work if you assign the doorbell to its own wifi channel like your 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz channels. That way, it has a dedicated connection and won't buffer as much. Please give it a try, and let us know how it goes.

Best regards,

Brad.
