Nest doorbell wired Gen 2 - chime makes buzzing sound only when the doorbell is pressed

Hi, I just bought a Nest Doorbell wired Gen 2 for my new home. After installing the Nest doorbell, the indoor mechanical chime works fine, but it makes a buzzing noise only when the doorbell is pressed. There is no continuous buzzing noise when the doorbell is not pressed. Below is a list of everything I've tried to fix the issue. Can someone please guess why this is happening? Thank you.

Note:

Things I've tried:

  • With the transformer 16V/10VA, I've tried disconnecting the nest chime connector from the mechanical chime. It rings with a buzz when disconnected, but it does not ring when the nest chime connector is connected.
  • I've tried using the transformer 16V/30VA. The chime rings with a nest connector connected, but the buzzing issue persists.
  • Customer service sent me a replacement nest doorbell. I tried the new device, but the issue persists.
  • I've tried using different mechanical chimes (Newhouse Hardware CHM4 Doorbell Chime), but the issue persists with transformers 16V/10VA and 16V/30VA.
  • I've tried using a 24V mechanical chime (Newhouse Hardware CHM24V), but the issue persists with transformers 24V/40VA.
  • I've tried putting back the old doorbell, and no buzzing sound was made.
  • I've tried playing with the google home app to set the electronic chime on or off, set the duration to 1–10 seconds, and turn on/off the indoor chime.

I've tried replacing the doorbell device, transformer, and chime. Now I'm out of ideas and seeking other people's help. I know some might say, Just use the nest hub or speaker; I know I could. But I've been trying to resolve this issue for a while and really want to find the solution. Please help. Thank you.

Hmmmm, if you were to disconnect the Nest Doorbell and remove the Chime (puck) adapter and reconnect the old doorbell does it make the buzzing sound?    Of hand it just sounds like that is the noise that an AC Solenoid makes when it is energized.

The other thing that comes to mind is in the app I believe there is a setting called CHIME DURATION.  It might be set too long (like 5 seconds) when it really only needs to be set to 1 second.  It it is too long the it is like someone is holding the button down and it buzzes until released.

Hi,

I've tried putting back the old doorbell  and there was no buzzing sound. I also played with the app setting the indoor chime off and on, and chime duration from 1sec to 10sec.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to add these to the Things I've tried...

Hi dsk4370,

Thanks for posting in the community!

I'm so sorry to hear that you're hearing a buzzing sound when pressing your Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen). No worries; I'm here to help! I see that you have tried some steps, and customer support even replaced the doorbell. But even with that, the situation persists. I just have a couple of questions that will help me understand better what's going on.

  • Do you use the old chime connector with the new doorbell?
  • Have you tried to check the voltage with a multimeter?
  • Have you verified that all wire connections are tight, secure, and free from corrosion or paint?
  • What type of chime do you have (mechanical, electrical, etc.)?

Knowing this information will allow me to provide you with the best troubleshooting.

If you have more questions for me, feel free to reply to this post. I'll be happy to assist further.

Best regards,

Nery.

Hi,

  • Do you use the old chime connector with the new doorbell?
    • I tried using both the old and new chime connectors with the new doorbell.
  • Have you tried to check the voltage with a multimeter?
    • No, I did not. I do not own a multimeter. I was hoping I would not need one.
  • Have you verified that all wire connections are tight, secure, and free from corrosion or paint?
    • Yes, I have
  • What type of chime do you have (mechanical, electrical, etc.)?
    • I have a mechanical chime.

Thank you!
