I have the same problem that has been described many times in this forum by other users (threads have all been locked)! Despite tons of effort and many troubleshooting rounds for months, the Nest (battery) doorbell simply will not click into place on the metal bracket.
The device is of course out of warranty period now, approximately 16 months after purchase (silly me for trying to DIY troubleshoot for months).
Is there any hope google will replace this piece of garbage?
Will Google EVER release a fully tested, functional, and supported product?

Right there with you. Support told me to buy a new one.

Incredible. Thanks for the perspective. I am done with this garbage brand.

Video isn't helpful when the latch breaks.

Hi andrewpunch,
Thanks for getting back to us. To confirm, do you mean the latch of your mounting plate? If possible, could you send us the photo of your mounting plate and the whole back of your Nest Doorbell. Keep us posted.
Thanks,
Emerson

Same problem. The doorbell simply will not latch onto its mounting bracket.

Not a solution to the mechanical connection, but you can get the doorbell to work without being properly mounted and use whatever method you can figure out to mount it. To trick the device into mounted/ready mode, place a small magnet on the back, just above and to the right of the electrical connection screws. Move it around until you find the right spot, then tape in place. You can then affix it however and wherever you like.

Appreciate the hack-tip, but requiring this kludge is just absurd. Google can't even build a functional latch.

I'm having this same issue and can't find a fix. And of course my warranty expired a month ago. This is ridiculous.

Update: Talked to customer service. Their advice was to buy a new doorbell, which is outrageous given that the camera still works perfectly. My advice is don't buy one of these.
