No event captured by nest floodlight camera

FormerNestFan
Community Member

Last night, within the direct view of the camera, I had an opossum get into a food bucket. If I scrolled back on the video's timeline, I was able to watch the action, clearly seeing and hearing the activity, but it was not detected by my floodlight cam and I therefore cannot make a clip of it!

Why was this event not captured? Is it a bug in the camera's software? Again, the activity was captured and viewable, just not registered as an event. Also, what is the reason that Google removed the clip-making ability? Is it a cost-savings thing? I can't imagine engineers can't figure it out...is it that Google doesn't want to properly invest in the Nest line of products?

Our Google Nest Camera (Battery) plugged in with the optional power cable (a camera very similar to the floodlight camera) does a poor job of detecting events at night, but we can see the events in our 24/7 history.

Is poor event detection a known issue with the Nest cameras? Are there plans to fix? I get that things are harder to see at night, but motion should set off the light, also in my video with the opossum, I had no problem seeing things in the playback, so it being night can't be why it didn't register...plus that leads to problem #2 and that is we cannot create clips with the new versions of cameras like we can with the older versions.

Hey folks,

FormerNestFan, I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble with this. No worries, we'll check this out. When did it start happening? Has the camera been moved recently? Also, are there any Activity Zones set up for the camera?

Check out this link on how to Change floodlight settings.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Thanks,

Archie

Hi Archie,

I am not certain when it started happening. I first noticed it fairly recently when it was obvious that there was some activity on my deck but no events recorded. It actually just happened again about 30 minutes ago. The opossum was back, but we didn't know and my kid opened the door to put things in the recycle bin and let out a scream when he saw the critter and then it scurried off. Again, no events recorded, but I was able to rewind to see it. The motion does go off sometimes and I've recorded other (wild life) activity, including our neighborhood opossum.

I've checked my device's settings and motion is set to "High". Some things are recorded (thought it's impossible to say the success/failure rate), so I know it works, just not all the time.

Again, it's two issues; 1) not all events are registered/captured, which is a bug. And that leads to issue #2) because it prevents me from saving a clip. Tonight was a cute/funny moment that I'd like to clip off and share, but I cannot. And by the way, when I save clips on my Nest doorbell (older version) and share them out, there's indication that it was recorded by a Nest Cam with some specific device info included, which I'd think is good advertisement. Why Google has removed this feature is bonkers!

I'd probably agree that it's nighttime-related, but the most puzzling part of this is that in each case (for me), the motion sets off the light, so the action was illuminated.

@FormerNestFan

That's a good point.  So the floodlight's motion sensor works better than the camera's motion sensor.

Hi there,

Just checking in on this thread and the activity on it. We'll leave this topic open for another 24 hours in case there are any follow-up questions or comments.

Best regards,
Brad

There hasn't been much activity on this thread, but I there has an answer, either. I still do not know why all activities aren't registering as events (motion detection is set to High). And the other question is, why did Google remove the ability to clip off portions of our video to host like we could on previous Nest generations?

If you have an active Nest Aware subscription, you can edit and move your Familiar faces if it is not detecting faces. You also have the options to edit the sensitivity of each alert type. Have you tried to change any of those settings? Please let me know.

Best regards,

Brad

As mentioned, it's possums (I was incorrect in my previous posts by calling them opossums), not people and also as mentioned, I have looked at the sensitivity settings and sensitivity is set to High. Also for events, it's set to detect Animals and Motion, which is described to include "everything else your camera sees".

I'd be very impressed if Nest could distinguish the faces of possums though.

There are far too many opossums in the world to identify all of them of course, but in the meantime, we’re always looking for ways to improve, and appreciate your feedback. You can send it at any time using your devices, following the steps found here. I would suggest sharing your experience with our engineering teams.

Best regards,
Brad

Brad, I can't tell if you're being serious or not. I would not make a suggestion for possum facial recognition. My problem has nothing to do with facial recognition and I wasn't sure why you had offered a tip related to Familiar Faces. You didn't read the thread, and that's okay.

The problem, again, is that an animal was getting into my recycle bin, which is in clear view of the camera, the light sensor would trigger, but there was no event captured in the nest app, so I was unable to save a clip of it. It happened multiples times where we saw activity, but no event was registered. I could use my app to watch the possum, but again since it wasn't registered as an event, clips could not be saved.

To be honest, the novelty of wanting to use the features has worn off a bit. I had been excited by the floodlight, but I guess I'm over it. My experience with the different apps and features between my older Nest products; Doorbell (wired), Protect, and Thermostat that all work with the Nest app compared with the Floodlight Camera with the Google Home app is pretty significant, and from what I've read from others, I don't think I'm alone. It's too bad, I bought into an product line based on very positive experience with the older nest line/app, and really other than the brand, they're all very different products. What's truly unfortunate is that despite customers being very vocal about their displeasure, Google doesn't seem to care.

I was attempting to be playful, my apologies if I offended you in any way. If you have animals enabled for notifications, sometimes it won't register animals in an event. This seems to be the case, as you aren't able to make a clip. I am afraid that all I can offer you in advice would be to set up activity zones, and hopefully it will capture the next event, so you can make a clip out of it. Of course, you're welcome to share this feedback on the app with our engineers and developers.

Best regards,

Brad

It's ok. Sorry I was so reactive. My first thought was you were kidding, but then started wondering if it was thought that I was really looking for possum recognition 😂.  These comments can get bogged down with too much ranting and the issues at hand/requests for help can easily get lost.

I see there is a support option from within the Google Home app, so if I need to pursue this any further, I can open up a request there.

Thank you
