Outdoor Camera with Floodlight - Horizontal Mount

I've seen a couple of other posts with a similar situation, but no final updates. I purchased two of the Nest outdoor cameras with floodlights and I foolishly assumed I could just replace my other outdoor floodlights with them. The existing lights are hung from the soffit/eave of the house. I've seen people mention hanging it anyway, but I really don't want to lose out on sensor functionality.

I did see a post where someone was working on 3D printing a 45 degree angled box. Has anyone had any luck with finding a box that will work so that I can attach the camera to the eave and have it mounted vertically still? @Ron116  Were you able to get a mount? I'd be really interested in seeing if it worked and, if so, would like to get some myself.

I do have access to a 3D printer, so if you have the blueprint maybe I could print one myself 🙂

I've been running mine now all vertically mounted (6 of them), and couldn't be happier. Everything is set to default (sensitivity), and I would not want them any more sensitive. The only sensor affected is the Floodlight/daylight sensor. The camera is the same, no matter which direction it's pointed, and mine detects vehicles driving down the road at 70 yards easily. The floodlight sensor is just as accurate, and they come on at night when there is the slightest motion in any direction. I would not hesitate to install another one vertically, and I was one of the first to try it this way, question it on this forum, and test it. If I had a horizontal mount (like one of the ones I saw), would I have mounted it horizontally? I probably would have, just to get them closer to the eave (more protected), but I'm fine how they are.

Thanks your input was greatly appreciated and helped me feel better when mounting my floodlight under an eave. I was about to return it and go with a Ring Floodlight which looked like it had a more traditional floodlight design with 3 arms.

I definitely understand how frustrating your situation must be, and I wanted to make sure that your concern was acknowledged. Do you still need help with this issue? I know that there's been a delay in response since you posted.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

I had similar reservations. I installed my first Google Nest Floodlight last weekend. I installed it under the eave where my old floodlight was located. The installation was quite easy but definitely not well documented for this specific type of installation (as it isn't designed for that).

I have noticed that the sensor underneath which is supposed to go 25 feet is limited because of the vertical angle now, but the floodlights come on with camera events and I've been happy with the performance. We'll see how long it lasts in this position.

I do think it was an unwise design choice as most floodlights are mounted horizontal under eaves. I think support might say it's not supported but I've seen quite a few users do it so far, including myself. It's only been there a week so we'll see how well it works.

The software has a setting to flip the image 180 degrees so SOMEONE thought it was needed 🙂

Just checking in with @Ron116 one more time to see if you had any luck with your design and if it's available for ordering or use. I have two cameras and I'm waiting before I run to the hardware store and try rigging up something with an electrical box.

I do still need help, but it looks like there really isn't any help to be given. I didn't read the specifications closely enough. I didn't realize they were vertical mounted surfaces only. I just assumed because it said that it could be mounted on the spots of my existing floodlights. I also missed the return timeframe.

It's a real shame because I like the devices. We love our wired Google doorbell. I might try to hold out and see if someone comes out with a third-party mount of some sort.

@ohholyjoely

I am sorry about the inconvenience! Yeah, only horizontal surfaces can be used. Until there is another option, I am going to go ahead and lock this thread as nothing more can be done at this time.

Best regards,

Brad.
