Outdoor Nest Camera keeps going offline

HthrPlace

We've had an outdoor camera for about a year now and it functioned flawlessly for about 10 months.  Then, all of a sudden, it started going offline randomly, and only for a few minutes or less at a time.  Some days, it would go offline at least a dozen times, while other days it might only be once or twice.  We tried all the suggestions of moving it, factory resetting it, etc. and nothing changed.  After getting ticked off one too many times, we decided to buy a new camera thinking maybe the hardware was just shot.  NOPE.  Same problem with BOTH cameras now.  The cameras can be sitting right next to my router and STILL go offline.

From what I'm reading this is a problem for A LOT of people. What is Google doing to resolve this??

@HthrPlace

Which camera do you have? We have had several of the older Google Nest Outdoor Cameras for years as well as one Google Nest Camera (Battery) plugged in all the time with the optional power cable. All of them are consistently online and "Live".

Since TWO of your cameras are going offline, perhaps there is SOMETHING going on with your Wi-Fi network that is causing this. Or do you by any chance have a battery camera running on battery power? Some customers have reported issues with that.

I have the Nest 2 Indoor/Outdoor cameras.  They aren't plugged in and operate on battery.  The main reason why I don't think it's my wifi is because they don't go offline at the same time. Plus, my husband works from home and if we had issues with the wifi being intermittent, then he'd be affected as well.

Maybe it's an issue with the fact that they are running on battery power and are "Idle" most of the time. We've had the same battery camera for 16 month now, plugged in with the optional power cable, and it is "Live" all the time and does not go offline. I've seen these posts:

Hi everyone,

@HthrPlace thanks for posting here in the Community. Let's go ahead and see what we can do here. Aside from what MplsCustomer is asking, are you getting any error messages? How far is the camera from the router? Are there devices or appliances (such as baby monitors, microwaves, cordless phones, etc.) near the camera? What is the light status of your Nest Camera?

Give these steps a try:

  • When the issue happens, try restarting your Nest Camera, Wi-Fi router and your mobile phone.
  • Hit this link for the steps to reset your Nest Camera to the factory default.

Looking forward to your response.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Regards,
Emerson

The only error message/notification is that the camera is offline, nothing else. One camera is about 15 feet from a repeater and the second camera is about 10 feet from the router itself. There are no devices or appliances anywhere near either camera. Other than them randomly going offline (at different times which is why I don't think it's my internet), there are no issues and the status light is green.

I have done all the steps recommended more than once - well, except restarting it when it's offline because by the time we get to it, it's back online again. Typically, it's only offline for a minute or less before it come back on, but I have restarted each camera several times after instances where it's gone offline as well as restarting the router.

Hello HthrPlace,

Thanks for getting back to us and for sharing with us your update. To further isolate this issue, you may try exchanging the position of your 2 Nest Cameras. If your second Nest Camera has the same issue, then we would recommend you to change its placement. Check its behavior and update us here.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Best,
Emerson

Both cameras have the same issue. The reason I don't think it's my wifi/internet connection is because they go offline at separate times.  For example, last night, one went offline at 1:30 am and the other went offline at 2:45 am. If it was the wifi connection, it would seem that they would go offline at the same time.

@EmersonB do you have any other suggestions?

Having the same issue with two Outdoor cameras. Started going offline randomly, now it's days at a time.
