Steam footage to TV

I cant seem to find a solid answer to my question and sorry if this has already been answered. I am looking to move away from Ring as I have gaps in footage and want a 24/7 capable camera. I would also like to mount a small tv with a chrome cast or device that I can stream from.

My question will I be able to continuously stream live footage to this device that I want mount in my office and bedroom? If so how many active streams can I have? If not what are its limitations on doing so?

Hi Divour,

Thanks for posting, It is a great question, but unfortunately no, you can't directly stream live footage from a Nest camera to a Chromecast-equipped TV. Nest cameras, like most security cameras, prioritize recording efficiency and don't offer continuous live streaming features.

However, there are ways to achieve a similar result with some workarounds:

Leverage the Google Home App (Limited Functionality):

  1. Requirements: Nest camera, Chromecast-equipped TV, Google Home app on your phone/tablet.
  2. Process: Open the Google Home app and access your Nest camera feed. You can then cast this live feed to your Chromecast-enabled TV. However, this method has limitations:
    • Not Continuous: The cast might time out after some time, requiring you to recast the feed.
    • Limited Control: Navigation and control options might be limited while casting from the app.

Let me know if that helps.

Regards,

Ivan

Thanks, yeah I was more so concerned about he continuous stream capability if it would timeout or cut off after a period of time. Is there anywhere I can find out how long it will stay active?

Thanks for your response.

There isn't an official specification for how long a Nest camera stream will stay active when cast to a TV. Nest cameras themselves prioritize recording efficiency and don't offer continuous live streaming features.

Here's the breakdown of timeouts you might encounter:

Nest Camera Limitations: The camera itself won't timeout the stream as long as it's powered and connected to Wi-Fi.

Casting with Google Home App: This is the common method to cast the Nest camera feed to a Chromecast-enabled TV. However, this method has limitations:

  • Timeouts: The cast might expire after a while, forcing you to recast the feed. There's no official info on the exact timeout duration.

Ivan
