Video event history not complete

rcortesim
Community Member

I have Nest Aware, which I believe only gives me 10 days of 24 hour video history, and only "events" that occur on days beyond 10 days. However, my issue is that not all events are being recorded and saved. Here's an example:

I wanted to confirm that the pool guy came on a specific day that was three weeks ago. There is an event in history on that day of him leaving, but not arriving, nor can I see what work he did. Without an event of his arrival, I have no idea that he was even there, except for the very short event of him leaving.

This is just one example, but I have noticed this issue several times in the past, where people have been in my backyard, but the event was not recorded, even when the event occurred within my 10 day 24 hour history.

What this requires me to do is scroll through an entire day's history to monitor activity, rather than simply find the events on the timeline.

There is no obstruction of the view, nor direct sunlight that is creating glare. I could send you a screen shot of someone walking within range of the camera, but no event recorded. However, I prefer to do that on a private message, rather than on this public forum.

@rcortesim

We have several older Google Nest cameras and doorbells, and a newer battery camera (plugged in) and a newer indoor camera. On occasion, all of them can fail to flag an event, but if we search we can find the event in the camera's 24/7 history for the last 10 days (we have the Nest Aware Plus subscription). At night it's more common for this to happen.

Just out of curiosity, which camera do you have? Is your camera within the 1-year warranty? If it's happening a lot, you could contact Support (https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp) about a replacement.

Mine are a few years old; hardwired, not battery. At night is when I need events to record. That's when suspicious activity occurs, right? Nest will retain the event of a car going by, but sometimes not the event of someone walking up my driveway.

@rcortesim

Our cameras--old and new- do not always flag every event, especially at night. There is also a recovery period of 10-15 minutes where the camera will not flag a second event that happens shortly after another event. A Google Community Specialist posted a chart of these recovery periods a few months ago, but then they deleted the post.

Hi rcortesim,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Community and for sharing with us your concern. I know how important it is to have the unexpected events be recorded by your Nest Cameras. Google Nest attempts to send you the right number of alerts at the right times, your Nest Camera will trigger a short cooldown period each time a notification is sent. While the duration of the cooldown period varies by alert type (e.g. person, sound, motion, etc.) the behavior remains the same. Once an event begins, an alert is sent and the cooldown period begins. Until the cooldown period expires without any new activity of that type, no new alerts of that type are sent. If notifications aren't sent because of a concurrent, higher priority alert, you wouldn't get notified until the cooldown for that event expires, and a higher priority event is no longer detected. Hit this link for more information.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Regards,

Emerson

Hey rcortesim,

I'm dropping by to ensure that everything is covered here. How's it going with your Nest Camera? Were you able to read the information and check the link I shared above? In case you have an update, you know where to find us.

Thanks,

Emerson

Hello rcortesim,

Just one quick final check in here since activity has slowed down. We'll be locking the thread in the next 24 hours, but if you still need help, I would be happy to keep it open. If there's more we can do, just let us know.
