Why does 1 of my nest camera turn off by itself?

My nest camera turns off on its own.   I have 2 others that do not.  I can not figure out why.

@Sdavejohnson

We've had Google Nest cameras and doorbells for over 4 years now (1st and 2nd gen), and none of them have ever turned off on their own.  Is power being interrupted to the one that turns off?

You could try contacting Support using the link and instructions in this post:

Hi Sdavejohnson,

Thanks for posting in our Community. I’m sorry to hear that your Nest camera isn’t working properly. Let’s check it out.

What type of Nest camera do you have? Is it battery-powered? Or plugged into a power outlet?

Let’s try the steps below.

Nest cameras

  1. If your camera is running on battery power, check whether the battery charge is low and charge it if needed. Cold temperatures can affect your camera's battery life, so you may need to charge it more often.
  2. If your camera is plugged into a power source, make sure that the power is switched on at the circuit breaker box. If your home's power is switched on but there's no power, there might be a power outage. In this case, contact your local energy service provider.
  3. Plug your camera into a different power socket and check if it turns on. If your camera works with the new socket, you might have to move your camera or contact an electrician to fix the socket.
  4. If power is on for your home but your camera doesn't seem to work in any socket, the power cable might have an issue. Replace the cable and check whether your camera works.
  5. If you've connected your Nest Cam (battery) to the solar panel, it can't charge your camera when temperatures fall below 0°C (32°F). So you may need to take your camera indoors and charge it with the included charging cable.

Nest doorbells

  1. If you have a Nest Doorbell (battery), check whether the battery charge is low, and charge it if needed. Cold temperatures can affect the battery life, so you may need to charge it more often.
  2. The battery can't charge when temperatures fall below 0°C (32°F). In cold weather, you may need to bring the battery indoors and charge it with the included charging cable.
    • If your Nest Doorbell (battery) is connected to another power source, it still uses battery power to work. So you may need to manually charge the battery in cold weather.
  3. If your doorbell is wired to your home's doorbell system or plugged in with a power adaptor, check that your home has power and that your doorbell is wired correctly.
  4. If your doorbell uses the doorbell wiring to stay powered and is properly connected, check the wire voltage. If it isn’t meeting the voltage and power requirements, you might need to upgrade the power transformer.

Keep me posted.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Regards,

Lance

It is battery powered.  The battery is not low.  It just turns off occasionally and I am able to turn it on via the app.

Hello Sdavejohnson,

Thanks for getting back to me. To completely isolate the battery issue, let´s factory reset the device. Follow the steps below:

  1. Save any video history on the device, if any. Follow this guide.
  2. Unmount the device and then connect it to the USB cable and power adapter.
  3. Locate the reset pinhole on the back of the doorbell.
  4. Insert and hold the pin (you can use an unfolded paper clip or a thumbtack).
    1. At 10 seconds, the status light will blink yellow four times, and you’ll hear a countdown tone.
    2. At 12 seconds, the status light will be steady, solid yellow while the doorbell starts the factory reset, and you’ll hear a confirmation tone.
  5. Release the button. Your device will restore to its factory settings.
  6. After the factory reset, your device will appear as "Offline" in the app until you remove it.
  7. To remove it from the app, open the app, then tap Settings > Remove device>  Confirm.
  8. Make sure the phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the selected network for the Nest device.
  9. Bluetooth should be enabled, but it should not be connected to any Bluetooth devices. Disconnect any Bluetooth devices paired to your phone, such as earbuds, smartwatches, etc.
  10. Cellular data should be turned off.
  11. If you have an iOS device, tap Settings > Privacy > Local Network and turn on Local Network Access for the Google Home app.
  12. Start adding the device back to the Google Home app.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Lance
