Wired Nest Hello Gen 1 losing power

My wired Nest Hello Gen 1 doorbell recently lost power randomly. Resetting at the breaker box would power the cam back up, but it would go down again after an hour or so. After doing some research I decided to upgrade the original transformer to a 24V 40VA. The camera is still losing power randomly, though after resetting at the breaker it sometimes maintains power for 48 hours, 8 hours, 3 hours etc - point is it stays on longer than with the old transformer but is still not reliable. I’ve measured the output at the transformer (27V) and at the doorbell (26V), double checked all wiring. When the camera loses power, sometimes I receive an “extreme temperature” warning, sometimes just an “offline” warning. And once it powered back up on its own in the middle of the day while I was at work, but then lost power again almost immediately.

I’ve read about the internal battery failing over time, and the doorbell is pretty old as far as tech goes - anything else I should check before trying a brand new doorbell?

My Hello gen1 did the EXACT same thing.... I also replaced the transformer with the 24vac/40va.  Now it won't stay powered up. I reset, and it powers up for about 20 seconds. During that 20 seconds, the Nest door bell rings, but the inside chime doesn't. Google support was no help.  When I disconnected the Nest doorbell, and crossed the wires, the inside chime did ring. Like I said in my previous post, I give up !!!

Same with my mechanical chime and Nest ringer/speaker notifications. I have that all turned off now to see if it made any difference but the doorbell still lost power after about 30 mins. I guess I just need to buy a new doorbell!

Reading these forums, there appears to be hundreds of people with similar issues all of a sudden. I can't believe all these units are failing at the same times. Something is going on with Google !!

I have had the same thing happen and yes the internal battery is typically good for 3-5 years.  In my case I have purchase used NEST HELLO doorbells from ebay sellers and both time had a positive result.   I see many are now available for $50.00.

Hi Folks,

Thank you for posting in the community. I see you're having trouble with your Nest Doorbell Wired (1st Gen) losing power. Even after replacing the transformer, it seems the device only stays operational for decreasing intervals--first 48 hours , then 8, and finally just three hours. I understand how frustrating this can be and I appreciate all the troubleshooting steps you've already taken. I'm glad to help.

For better assistance, please answer the following questions:

  • When did the situation first start?
  • Have there been any recent power outages in your area?
  • Has the doorbell been exposed to direct sunlight?

Please keep me posted on your findings.

Regards,

Byron

Thank you guys for your replies. I ended up buying an Onn brand video doorbell from Walmart for $44 plus tax. They partnered with Google in October and have full functionality within the Google Home app. Finished installation and setup yesterday, and so far I’m satisfied - especially at a quarter of the price of a new Nest.

That is a great solution.   I had heard about those cameras but until now forgot that was an option.
