Can't update Android System WebView on Chromecast with TV

paddylandau

I have a Chromecast with Google TV. In the past few days, it has been unable to update the app Android System WebView.

I tell it to update. It downloads just fine. It begins the installation, and then gives the extremely unhelpful message, ""Can't install Android System WebView."

I have restarted the Chromecast, uninstalled the existing updates, and restarted yet again. I also cleared the cache. Still no luck.

I have plenty of space on the device: 1.6 Gb.

Another thread advises using developer mode, but it gives no hint as to how to go about using it.

What suggestions do you have for me, please? Perhaps explaining how to enter development mode?

EDIT: After a couple of days, it has mysteriously solved its own problem. I have no idea why.

I had a several issue with Chromecast app on my 4K version and even with over 1GB free space I got message about not enough free storage.

removing some apps fixed it.

Thanks. I don't know whether I have the 4K or HD version. Do you know how I find out?

Bizarrely, although I couldn't get it to update for a couple of days, turning it on now, I see that it has updated itself. I can't imagine why!

With AIDA64 from Playstore you can look under System for Board/Device/Platform. 4K is named "sabrina" HD should be "Boreal".

Maybe Playstore cleared some cache to get more free space. I have no idea why it worked for you.

That's such a complicated way to find out! You'd think that it would be shown in the Settings somewhere. Mine is Sabrina, so 4K. Now I know! Thank you

Thank you for helping out on this thread, MagicAndre1981!

Hey there paddylandau,

I'm just checking up on this thread, do you have any more questions or need any additional help?

Best regards,
Jeran

Everything seems to be running fine, Jeran, thank you. A strange thing happened, though: It decided all on its own to install a few extra apps, e.g. Disney+. I have no clue why; I deleted them.

Hey there paddylandau,

I'm glad to hear that! As for the Chromecast auto-installing Disney+ and other apps, go ahead and uninstall the apps you don't want, then afterwards clear out the cached app data on the Google Play app. If the problem persists afterwards, please let me know.

Thank you,
Jeran
