Casting not consistent

Akcam

My older chromecast shave been dying, so I replaced two of them with chromecast+google tv’s.  After setup/signing into everything, the google tv remote functionality works great.  However, a house with two kids often means remotes are lost.  So more often than not, our phones end up being used to cast media to the chromecast.

Casting from my phone’s apps like Netflix, Hulu, Disney plus, NFL Sunday ticket, etc. works, but it’s no longer a one step process.  I used to open an app, find a video, press play, then tap cast and send it to my tv.  As an alternative, I didn’t mind casting from within the app prior to selecting the media to be played either.

the chromecast ultra, for its part, would turn my tv on, then begin playing the media.  On my chromecast+google tv, it turns the tv on to the google tv home screen….and that’s it.

Meanwhile, my phone says I’m casting , but nothing is playing on screen.  I have to disconnect, cast from within the app, then select media.  Sometimes I have to repeat this two or three times before it starts actually casting to the screen.

something seems to be different and not for the better.  I still have o e working older chromecast.  It works fine.  So does casting to my google nest hub.  It’s only the chromecast+live tv’s (both of them)that experience the issue.

any thoughts?

Hi Akcam,

Thanks for reaching out to the Chromecast Community. Please try to reboot your Chromecast and plug it in on a different HDMI port on your TV. For casting using your phone, please reboot your mobile device and clear the cache and data of the affected apps then reinstall it. Plugging it on a different TV screen might also help.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Thanks for the reply.  I’m happy to do that, but the reason I posted is because the behavior is consistent between two different chromecasts on two different - but both Samsung - tv’s, using two different - but both iPhone - phones.  All four devices are different models and software versions, both chromecasts are the same model, purchased at the same time.

iPhone XS Max iOS 15.6.1 and iPhone SE 3rd gen iOS15.6.1.  The Samsung tv’s are running software T-JZMAKUC-1260.1 and T-KTSU2AKUC-2303.1.

I think my first step will be to update everything.  Including the chromecasts+GTV if possible.  I’ll post back if that helps.

also, go ahead, you can say it, I work in support:  “That info would have been helpful in the initial post.”

Sorry, it’s hard to find time to work on my own things.  I have updated an iPhone to iOS 16, the Samsung UNK65KS850D is already at v1260.  I don’t know how to update a chromecast.

the issue still exists.  Also, I can no longer control the volume with my phone’s volume buttons, instead the chromecast tells me I have to use the remote.

Hi Akcam,

Thanks for getting back to us. Could you please try to reset your Chromecast dongle and Voice Remote and check if the same issue will persist?

Best,

Juni

Also, I have followed all of your advice regarding restarts, hdmi port change.  regarding data and cache of affected apps, I did try this with Hulu.  This issue affects all of my media apps.  I use HBO Max, Disney Plus, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime (and Apple TV, but they don’t allow casting from that app, gotta love competition suppression).
