Chromecast abroad

I am abroad and want to use my chromecast - none of the options such as 'forget Wifi' or factory reset are available to me. Does anyone have any advice for me pretty please?  [I don't know what generation I have]

Factory reset is always the route, the way to do this without using the app is on the chromecast itself, depending on generation:

1st gen:

From the Chromecast device

  1. While the Chromecast is plugged into the TV, hold down the button on the Chromecast device for at least 25 seconds or until the solid LED light turns into a flashing red light.
  2. Once the LED light turns blinking white and the TV goes blank, release the button. The device will begin the reboot sequence.

2nd Gen & Up

From the Chromecast device

While the Chromecast is plugged into the TV, hold down the button on the side of the Chromecast. The LED will begin blinking orange. When the LED light turns white, release the button and the Chromecast will begin the reboot sequence.

To reset a first-generation Chromecast, locate the button on the right side of the device, under the Chrome logo. Hold that button for around 25 seconds until the LED on the Chromecast turns red and starts blinking. Continue holding the button until it turns white and the TV’s screen goes blank, at which point you can release the button. Your Chromecast will then reboot in a reset state.

As for newer Chromecast generations, resetting is a slightly quicker process. Like with the original, there’s a button located around the circular design of the device — on Chromecast 3rd Gen, it’s directly to the right of the microUSB port; on Chromecast Ultra, it’s to the left of the HDMI cable. Once you find the button, hold the button down until the LED starts blinking orange. When it turns white, you can release the button and wait for your Chromecast to reboot

Can you go to this link and identify which chromecast you have?

Yes, that's the link I found before, the print has rubbed off, but I believe from visuals it's 3rd generation.

Oh gosh, "button" found! Thank you so much. After all that doesn't work as chromecast doesn't support a Wifi network requiring login [am at hotel for a week] ... or so it says. I alternatively turned my laptop into a hotspot [not supported], and then my mobile into a hotspot [which after several efforts works - yey!].   Thanks for your help [and patience].

Well, I am glad you found the reset button, and were able to figure out that Hotspot trick for hotels!  enjoy!
