Chromecast’s Remote has stopped working and overheats quickly, flattening batteries

Doctorcloudbase

Hi,

My fairly new (< 12 months old) current generation chromecast with Google tv’s Remote control has stopped working, getting hot quickly and flattening any batteries ‘fed’ to it! There is obviously some sort of short-circuit going on, and I assume that is a terminal event!

Has the same thing been experienced by the community/is this a known problem? Solutions - aside from returning it to the retailer here in Australia?

 Thanks!

Hey there Doctorcloudbase,

I apologize about the late response, thank you for being patient! Were you still experiencing that overheating issue? If so, I'd be happy to help out, as that cannot be good. Let me just ask you some questions about what's happening:

  • When did this issue start happening?
  • What is the firmware version of the Chromecast Voice Remote?
  • When the device overheats, is it uncomfortable to the touch?
  • Have you already reached out to Chromecast support?
  • What troubleshooting steps have you already tried?

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

I do have a ticket ongoing with support I believe. It was made the day I posted this.

issue started in October last year

not sure firmware cannot use remote at all

still burns up batteries if inserted and gets very hot hot enough it’s probably a fire concern if it were left on cloth

chrome cast stuck in pairing mode since I factory reset it

I do have access to a firmware tool the same pin configuration as the board in the remote has but ide rather get a replacement then accidentally void the warranty

Hi folks,

Thanks for the help, Jeran.

silverback, did you get an update from the support you spoke with? Could you please provide the case ID of your interaction from our support team so I can check its status?

humaid, a few questions: What is the LED light status in your Voice Remote? Was anything spilled onto the device? Can you confirm if the metal contacts of the battery terminal look contaminated, blocked, or discolored?

Try these steps and observe the behavior of your voice Remote:

  1. Go to  Settings > System > About > Factory Reset. Select Factory Reset again and select Erase to confirm the reset.
  2. Replace all batteries at the same time. Do not mix old and new batteries. Do not use lithium-ion or any other batteries with rated voltage above 1.5 V.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hi,

  • LED is off.
  • Nothing spilled on the device.
  • The metal connectors are very clean.
  • I did change all batteries at the same time. they get over heated and they loose charge within minutes.
  • I can't do factory reset from chromcast because the remote is not connected. i also tried to reset by pushing the home button but the device overheated quickly and it was not responding to reset command.
