Chromecast with Google TV 4K - Wifi keeps reconnecting after update to Android 12

Hello,

after the upgrade of my CCWGTV 4K to Android 12 (build STTE.220621.019.A2.9082754) I have trouble connecting to my wifi network. It connects, but as soon as it gets the addresses, more specifically the IPv6 addresses from DHCP it disconnects and tries reconnecting again, this whole cycle repeats indefinitely. It was working just fine before the update. I tried deleting saved wifi network, rebooting the Chromecast, router, access point, switch.

I suspect this to be a problem specifically with the IPv6 address. To test this I created a separate wifi network on the same access point (Unifi AC Pro), assigned it to a different VLAN, which had the IPv6 disabled and when it got only the IPv4 from DHCP the connection stayed active without reconnecting. If it helps I am running dual-stacked IPv4/IPv6 native from ISP on my OpenWRT router. On all other devices (including Android 12 Galaxy S21) both IPv4 and IPv6 works just fine and no issues with Wifi.

Here is a video of the problem: https://youtu.be/lzZ_4UBeNwI

Hi @InToSSH

I have read some other experiences on Reddit with issues in combination with IPv6.
So it could be an issue with the Google TV indeed.

Is there some QoS you can enable to check if that is causing issues?

Hi @RXShorty

thank you for the reddit link. I see for some it was a problem even before the update, strangely enough I never had such issues on any Android 10 FW on this device. It seems the IPv6 stack changed in the Android 12.

I don't use any QoS on the network. I use the Unifi AP AC Pro and Unifi switch, which have just basic bandwidth profiles to limit up/download. Then each SSID is tagged to a different VLAN, all going to the OpenWRT router. To apply some QoS on the OpenWRT I would have to reconfigure my interfaces and firewall to use DSCP marking and since I don't have any other use for it I don't want to invest much time into it. Since the IPv6 is native, not through a 6to4 tunnel I believe it should have same throughput and firewall rules as the IPv4.

Hi folks,

@RXShorty, thanks for the help.

@InToSSH, I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Please let me know if you are still having any concerns or questions from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Best,

Dan

Hi @Dan_A ,

thank you for looking into this.

Well, the primary issue still has not been fixed. Whenever there is an IPv6 stack deployed on the Wifi network, the Chromecast with Google TV keeps reconnecting indefinitely.

For now I have been able to continue using the device with a workaround, where I created a separate Wifi network which is VLANed to the router and has IPv6 disabled.
However it would be best if somebody could take a look at the firmware to figure out why the IPv6 stack is causing these problems, because in the future the IPv6 will be made more and more available by ISPs worldwide and basic users probably won't know how to disable the IPv6 on their routers.

Hi InToSSH,

Apologies for the late reply. Could you open this link: Chromecast firmware versions and release notes

Send me your current firmware version. Also, how far is your Chromecast with Google TV(4k) from your router/modem? Have you tried rebooting and using a different HDMI port? We really do need to narrow things down here. If needed, how about doing a factory reset to revert your CCWGTV 4K  back to its default and original settings. You need to set it back up. Make sure there are no other devices linked to your HDMI.

Keep me posted.

Thanks,

Dan

Hello @Dan_A , thank you for your suggestions and sorry for my late response, I was away from home.

- The Wifi access point is about 4 meters away from the Chromecast, just the TV being in the way, however the signal should not be the problem since the connection is working perfectly fine on my secondary VLANed SSID without IPv6, which is coming from the same AP.

- I am not sure how changing the HDMI port where the Chromecast is connected to my TV, especially when the Chromecast is not powered by the HDMI, would affect wifi connection that keeps reconnecting while using IPv6, but I did it anyway, however as expected it didn't help.

- I would like to leave the factory reset only as a last resort, because I have multiple apps, services and Kodi set up on the Chromecast, so it would take a long time to set everything back up, but if there are no other suggestions, I am willing to do that to help narrow the problem down.

However as I said, I am currently able to use the Chromecast on my secondary network without IPv6, however if this is a problem directly with the IPv6 stack in the firmware of the device, probably others will run into the same problem aswell.

Hello InToSSH,

Apologies for the late reply.

Let’s try to set up your Chromecast device via ethernet. Follow the instructions on this link.

You might also want to check this guide to gain more information about the setup process and its requirements.

I know doing the factory reset would change things but it’s also important. It will revert your device back to its default and original settings, although you need to set it back up, it’s actually more like starting fresh. If you decide to, click this link and follow the steps.

Tell me how it goes.

Best regards,

Dan

Hello @Dan_A ,

at this point I feel like you can't provide any more advanced technical support for my issue.
In my first post I elaborated on the problem, talking about the wifi issues, where through my troubleshooting I found that the problem is caused by IPv6, where I created separate VLANs to my router and I configured the IPv4 stack only, created multi SSID network on my AP and even tried multiple different brand APs.
Even @RXShorty confirmed by his reddit link that the IPv6 is the most likely cause.

Yet I get "support" from you by asking me to switch HDMI ports on my TV - without any explanation why this would be of any relevance. And then asking me to purchase a special Ethernet adapter for the Chromecast. Why would I do that? The Wifi with IPv6 used to work before upgrade. I want to use Wifi again, not ethernet cable and I see no reason why I would spend money on something that will not fix the issue anyway.

Some of the answers you provided feel like they have been auto responded by some robot based on few keywords I wrote and don't take into account all the details I provided. I understand that most of the time your customers may ask "stupid" questions which are easily solvable by RTFM and for those you have prepared answers linking to your manuals, but sometimes there are more technical issues to which I try to provide as much info as I can and do troubleshooting even before asking.

Anyway, only sensible thing to do now is to try and factory-reset the device to rule out some internal misconfiguration of the device after the update. If this doesn't help, I feel like I won't get any more help here and I will just have to leave my Chromecast connected to the secondary SSID with IPv6 disabled and hope that this will be fixed in the next firmware release.

Thank you anyway.

Best regards,

Jarda

Hi InToSSH,

Thanks for the reply. I understand you on everything but doing the factory reset will revert your device back to its original state which can help with our troubleshooting.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Dan
