Connecting a 4K Chromecast to Hotel WiFi

Hi all,

This is my first Google Nest Community post but I am a prolific forum user, I work in IT and own several Google devices.  To set the scene, I am on holiday in the US and staying in a Marriott hotel.  I have an older generation Chromecast (no remote) and a Roku (with remote) so know the drill when it comes to connecting my devices to hotel WiFi but below is my experience after purchasing a new 4K Chromecast with Google TV here in the US, having issues connecting to Marriott guest WiFi and how I resolved it.

  • Tip: if you are staying at a Marriott hotel and you want to connect a Chromecast (or similar streaming device) to guest WiFi (e.g. MVC_GUEST) you may need to contact the front desk to have your device MAC address added.  This enables your device to connect without going through the hotel captive portal page that usually pops up when you first connect.
  • Problem: I could not find the MAC address for my Chromecast before connecting and the Google help page here did not work because the MAC address option was greyed out.
  • Solution: Not ideal when you are roaming in another country but I set my Google Pixel phone up as a hotspot for just a few minutes to connect and set up the Chromecast.  I was then able to get the MAC address from ‘Settings’ in the top right hand corner and quickly disconnect from my hotspot.  I then called the front desk as described in my Tip above and hey presto, all connected and able to stream.

I hope this helps someone else. 👍
