Disney+ Dolby Atmos not being supported by Google Chromecast 4K

Suncraft

Dolby Atmos in Disney+ not showing in Google Chromecast 4k. Netflix is able to detect the Dolby Atmost Enabled sound system and is able to play. But all Disney content does only show 5.1 as audio output.

Does the Google chromecast support Dolby Atmos on Disney+? Why are other streaming services showing Dolby Atmos except for Disney+?

Same problem, all other subscriptions services allowing Atmos, Disney+ only showing 5.1. this is recent, and seems to happen every time the Disney+ app gets an update.

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. Based on all of your descriptions, it seems that it’s not the Chromecast capability of streaming with Dolby Atmos that's the problem, but more like the handover of Disney+ content that can’t seem to send a format that the Google TV platform considers Dolby Atmos. If it’s an issue with the Chromecast device, none of the apps (Netflix, Prime Video, etc.) can play Dolby Atmos contents. If troubleshooting the app, like clearing cache and data, or reinstalling the app won’t fix it, I suggest you reach out to Disney+ about this. Just ensure that your Chromecast device’s firmware is up-to-date.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Kimy

Nothing to do with Disney works fine on Firestick and TV apps just not this POS Google product.

Hi Crsnuwh,

Thanks for posting here. If all other apps on the Chromecast with Google TV that support Dolby Atmos are working, then the hardware and software on the Chromecast device related to that feature are working as intended. Platform-wise, the Dolby Atmos for Disney+ App may work on Android smartphones, iOS devices, Firestick devices, etc., but they may need to check on the Disney+ app intended for the Google TV platform. It can also be related to the settings of the app, the configuration that can be done on a per-account basis, or a server-based or geo-tagging basis. Let us know if you have other concerns related to your Chromecast device.

It works on my Nvidia TV shield with Google tv. Bit not chromecast?

Hi Witto,

Thanks for joining this thread. The Nvidia TV Shield is an Android TV platform, not a Google TV platform. Check out this link: NVIDIA TV Shield vs. Chromecast with Google TV (4K): Which streaming device is right for you? for more information. I hope this clarifies the confusion.

Let us know if you have other concerns.

Hello Witto,

Thanks for the reply. The more reason why this needs to be reported to them, so they’ll be aware that the Disney+ app running on the Google TV platform seems to have some issues for a few users, hence they need to investigate. The Disney+ app may be working on the Android TV platform, Android handheld (smartphones and tablets) platform, iOS (iPhones, iPads, etc.) platform, Mac OS (Macbooks, iMac, etc.) platform, ChromeOS (Chromebook, Pixel Slate, Pixelbook, etc.) platform, etc., but not on Google TV, which is one of the platforms that they invested in to market this app. And since there are millions (or more) of users of Chromecast with Google TV around the world where the Disney+ app is available, it would be a huge challenge to beat their competition (Netflix, Prime Video, etc.) if they don’t do something about it.

Chromecast with Google TV is a device, and Google TV is a platform. Now this will be a different story if all users are encountering the same. That means there’s something on the coding that doesn’t work, which will make the Google TV team coordinate with Disney, and both parties engineers and developers start working on the matching codes. The situation doesn’t seem to be on that level, so contacting Disney might help. It’s possible that you’re not the first group of people to report this, and they may already have a workaround.

I hope this sheds some light on the situation. Let us know if you have other questions.

Kimy

Found this topic while googling the issue.. same issue for me. On my Chromecast I have only 5.1 at Disney Plus (already shown 5.1 as tag. On Netflix I have Dolby Atmos.  At my Xbox One X, both apps have Atmos.

I don't think it's only related to the app, since I can find older reddit threads mentioning Android and Disney problems with Atmos, but where fixed in a specific release. A lot of people would already report that to Disney if the problem would be back. This topic here is already older, but I still suffer with that problem. My conclusion is, that it is a problem between Chromecast 4k and the Disney Plus app.

There isn't anything we as consumers can do..  Disney support will tell us to clear cache, factory reset the Chromecast or even reboot our router.. lol..

It's your product not working like intended, is it your fault? Probably not, but you are the only one who can change it.. or I just switch back to firetv..

Hi there,

Thanks, @RobertoMX.

Casting the app from your smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc. is also a workaround since it wouldn’t rely on whatever settings or configurations have caused the limitation on the installed app in your Chromecast with Google TV. Let us know how it goes.

Same for me - I bought a brand new Chromecast with Google TV HD to use with my TV and soundbar. I set up Disney+, and noticed Dolby Digital sound (not Atmos) is reported in my Sonos app when playing content. If I cast the same content to the Chromecast from my phone then Sonos shows Atmos sound is being played.

Would be good if Google could help Disney to understand there is an issue to fix.

Hi sjmac,

Thanks for joining this thread. We also suggest that Disney+ subscribers send feedback directly to their app. They sure have a brand reputation committee that scouts through social media and forums like this for awareness. With that data and the user feedback, hopefully we will witness some changes. Let us know if you have other concerns with your Chromecast device.

Cheers,

Kimy

This seems to have work for me: In advance sound options on the Chromecast and change the sound format option to Manual and select all the sound formats even the unsupported ones and worked. Hope this is a solution for some of you.
