No sound on Chromecast with Google tv

Adamsm86

I keep getting no sound on my Chromecast with Google TV.  I have to keep restarting it to get sound back working. Sound works on tv as I use it daily but as soon as I switch to Chromecast then the sound goes and I have to reboot Chromecast again. Is there a fix for this? It was working fine for over a year but only recently it's been happening. Tv is the same so no new hardware.

Hey folks,

Good news! Last week, we started rolling out an update for Chromecast with Google TV that should mitigate this behavior. Kindly observe your devices from time to time and give us a shout if you continue to experience it.

We appreciate everyone’s patience.

Best,
Kimy

Hi @Adamsm86

Is the Google TV up to date?
To check please do the following: Settings --> System --> About --> System update

Always check twice as sometimes the first check won't find any updates.

If your Google TV is up to date you could try setting up your Audio settings to manual mode, with the Advanced sound settings. 😊

Tried all suggestions but still no luck.

Hi @Adamsm86

Could you try the setting don't use Surround in the advanced setting?

I know at some older versions surround was causing issues.

I am having the same issue after the latest January security update. I only started  having the issue after that update

*** UPDATE 24 MAY ***  Still no response/fix from Google ...  The HDR 'fix' doesn't work for me.  What HAS been working for me over the last several days is using the CC/GoogleTV remote to turn off the TV, and using the TV remote to turn on the TV (I have CEC enabled).  I don't know if this order of operation allows a successful signal  'handshake' to occur, but the sound has been passed through without an issue.  If you try this, please give a thumbs up (so we can get a count on how many try it - not a vote on the comment) and then comment yes/no if it works for you -- I'm hoping it may help Google with figuring out what they broke.

*********************

I am suddenly having the same problem over the last couple of days ... no sound after turning on the connected tv, and turning the Chromecast on and off with the remote doesn't fix the problem.   I have to restart / reboot in order to have sound.

Just to add more info ...  TV: Hisense Roku G55u6 (no software updates since Dec '22)  Visio SB3651 soundbar.  Sound connected via HDMI with CEC turned on.  (Using an optical connection or turning off CEC does not solve the problem).  Using the 'restart' will no longer resolve the problem - I must do a hard reboot by unplugging the power source.

I have had no issues for over a year until a little over a week ago.

With so many people 'suddenly' having this issue, was there a patch sent out that we aren't aware of?

Android TV OS version 12, Security patch Jan 1, 2023, Android TV OS build STTE.221215.004.A1.9716989

***  UPDATE ***

Thank you to KOKLER who posted >>>  The last update has broken the audio via HDMI! If you just physically disconnect and reconnect the HDMI from the TV .... you will get sound instantly.  ....  >> This works for me - instead of rebooting the CC.

Yep this worked for me, but not really.
I use a sound bar, with my chromecast HDMI connected to the sound bar, and sound bar connected to the TV via HDMI.

Disconnecting HDMI made my tv switch to using the TV speaker for audio rather than my sound bar. Guess I’ll have to wait for Google’s update to reach me.

I am having this same exact problem.  I tried changing Chromecasts with one from another TV and I am having the same problem.  My Chromecast is connected via ethernet, TCL Roku TV, and sound going back through a HDMI return over HDMI.  Other Chromecasts that just use the TVs direct sound are working just fine.

Me too! Very frustrating

having the exact same issue.  just started doing this.

Note, some additional notes/diagnostics:

  • Set for no surround in Advanced Sound:  Still get same problem
  • All apps on Chromecast for GTV no sound through HDMI return
  • Roku Youtube TV app on same setup works perfectly through HDMI return

This needs to be fixed ASAP.  My wife approval scores for this are plummeting over standard cable.  This type of stuff never happened there and the costs are now almost even.

Same problem following latest (April) update.

Diagnostics: Tried all advanced sound settings, no effect. If you switch off TV using remote then immediately switch back on, the sound is fine, so it is obviously time dependent. Wonder if is linked to auto shut off timing setting? I have mine set to 30 minutes, will try switch on after this period of time has elapsed, and report back.

OK, so sound not effected if TV switched off for 5 minutes, then back on. However, if left off for 35 minutes (just beyond my 30 min auto shut off setting), sound is disabled again when TV powered up via remote, requiring chromecast restart.

Going to repeat with auto shut off set to never and see if that fixes things.

Auto shut off set at never. Sound is not effected when switched back on if TV switched off for 5 minutes and for 35 minutes. Some sign of hope? I`ll  switch off for a longer period to confirm.

Obviously, this will be a `hack` fix if confirmed, but may help.

That beats my hack of putting it on a smartplug and setting up a routine called "Restart Chromecast", so my family doesn't have to get me to turn on the TV!

It was a very good thought, but after changing shutoff to "never", I still appear to be having the issue.

How strange. Did 2 more tests, one last night at +5 hours after switch off, then again this morning at +7 hours. Both times the sound was fine when TV switched on. Other settings at play?  If you switch off, leave say 2 minutes then on does sound still fail?

It has made a difference.  It seems more likely that I'll have sound now.  Maybe in my setup it may have to do with switching TV inputs between Chromecast and Playstation on occasion.  I'll try to take more observations.

Bad news, came home from work, TV 9 hours off and had to restart Chromecast to get sound. Back to the drawing board, though time on standby does seem to play a role.

Yep, TV was not in use for about 3 hours and no sound.  No one else touched it and no changing of inputs.

I have it plugged directly into a TCL TV and sound over HDMI return to an older Yamaha receiver.  Anything in common with your configuration?

If you switch on your tv with the tv remote and then switch on your Google TV using the white remote sound works. Current hypothesis is that GTV is attempting to detect sound formats supported by TV on startup, but if you start using GTV remote the GTV starts before the TV and detects no sound. However if you start TV first it can detect supported sound formats.

I can confirm this does work, and it's easier then restarting the chromecast every time.

This worked for me too.

I am having the same issue. It seems to have been happening for about a week or so. Also it is only happening to one chromecast in my household. I have several others without the issue. The only way I have found to get sound to work again is to reboot the chromecast.

I've tried switching Chromecasts and it happens to other Chromecasts with this setup.  I've posted my setup in other messages, but almost no one else has so I am not sure what we all have in common.  I suspect something with either TV model and/or HDMI return channel sound.

Hi,

I have a sound problem with Chromecast with Google TV. The issue started a couple of days ago. When I switch on the device, and play content from any app, there's no sound. Sound is only available when I reboot the device. Any ideas what the issue might be?

HI,

Lately I have to restart my Chromecast every day. Because after not using it for a while, I'm loosing the sound.
Whatever app I use, there is no sound. Simple restarting solves this problem, however next day, same problem.
How can I solve this?

Thanks in advance

I'm having the audio continuously drop whole streaming. It comes back after I reset the dongle. I have tried power cycling, and factory reset. Can I request a replacement for this device? It's only a few months old.

I'm having the same problem with my Chromecast dongle. Was working fine for years. I have another one in my living room entertainment center and they are grouped. Whether I play separately or simultaneously only one drops audio for 1-3 seconds. Aldo this one randomly pauses on its own.

Facing something similar... My chromecast start with no audio most of time. I have to reboot it to recover the audio. This issue started with the last update

Sounds like a software bug, hopefully. I was thinking my device itself had broken, or was defective.

same exact problem.

running sound through HDMI to a JBL BAR5 sound bar.

is everyone involved running to an external sound source?

Mine is just plugged into the HDMI of a Sony TV. It's been working for a year with no issue. This just started happening recently and usually seems to happen after it has been off overnight. However none of my other chromecasts are having the same issue.
