Google assistant voice search not working

eeReece
Community Member

I brought the Chromecast with Google TV (2022) yesterday. The google assistant voice search was working fine until today when it doesn’t take in my voice commands. When i hold onto the button, the display comes up and gives me suggested searches.

Anyone with any help?

UPDATE:

Seems like the bug has been fixed. People in the thread are saying the same.

Hi kevmol,

Thanks for posting and for being a step ahead of us. We’re sorry for the trouble, and this is not the experience that we wanted you to have. A patch fix was supposed to have fixed this. Let’s do a full clean-up by performing a factory reset on the main Chromecast device. Also, try to factory reset the remote (optional), as that’s the trigger to initiate it. Let us know how it goes.

I’m still waiting for other users who are still experiencing this.

Sincerely,

Kimy

I am currently experiencing this. I just updated my remote and now when I hold the assistant down it just shows me search results and then tells me to speak. The little green microphone is showing that it's open though

Hi Skate11sm,

Thanks for sharing this. Kindly do the factory reset directly on the actual Chromecast device and not on the remote. Also, ensure that you have the most recent software/firmware version by checking if there’s an available update. Try all of this and let us know how it goes.

We look forward to your response.

Thanks,

Kimy

This still did not work. It says the same thing, it acts as though I tapped the assistant button, but not hold and register what I say

Hi there,

Thanks for posting here.

@eliot1, based on your description, this doesn’t seem to fall under the bug. The bug is about the Google Assistant listening to the user, then registering your voice command but won’t respond or react at all, compared to what you experience, which gives you suggestions on the screen. You can factory reset your Chromecast device for a full clean-up and then set it up from scratch.

@Skate11sm, did you press and hold the Google Assistant button while giving the voice command? Then release and quiet to wait for the Google Assistant to respond (which it didn’t)? If you did, then try the steps I suggested above. If it persists, we will proceed to the next step based on what the results yield.

We look forward to your response.

Warmly,

Kimy

Correct, @Kimy I did follow that process.

Hi Skate11sm,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, this is affected by that bug.

We’ll try a full clean-up by performing a factory reset on the main Chromecast device, then rebooting the TV. Also, try to factory reset the remote (optional), as that’s the trigger to initiate it. Let us know how it goes.

I am also experiencing the issue.  Specifically, when I hold the voice/assistant button, my words are recognized but no search is performed.  I've filled out the form also.

I am having this problem intermittently, but consistently. It seemed to fix itself a few days ago, but is back in earnest now.

I am on the phone to google support, who are frankly not being much help. it's taken about 10minutes for them to run me through turning it on and off again. not holding out hope.

Same issue, Google Assistant registers what I said correctly and then does nothing except provide some suggested searches. Very frustrating issue of basic functionality that should work on the device. I have restarted and still have the issue.

Did you ever figure this out? Happens to me too.

Has anyone actually gotten a fix on this yet? It’s been going on for weeks for me.

Skate11sm

@sncsy no, they had me fill out a form but no follow through yet

I have some insights since my earlier post.

I'm fairly convinced this is a automatic update issue. If I factory reset my devices they start working again for a short while. And then soon stop. I'm pretty confident this is because they work when at factory settings, and then as they work through automatic updates they stop working! There doesn't seem to be a way to stop these updates.

I've been on the phone and email support with Google, and they can't offer any assistance. And my devices are out of warranty. So right now their response is to hold up their hands. I'm intermittently responding to try and force the issue of actually fixing the root problem, but no luck yet.

Anyone who works this one out, please let us know!

I am noticing this problem still. Voice search doesn't work. It hears what I say but doesn't do any searching.

I am still having the same problem. My voice command is displayed on the screen, but no search is performed.

@Kimy when can I expect resolution on my submission?

Voice search for chromecast remote doesnt work for me either. It takes in command but unable to search. The form has been filled out. Kindly update once the bug has been fixed.

No not fixed. USA Northeast region. Annoying as hell.

Agreed @Mvj this is clearly not a single user issue. I am surprised Google have not replaced or provided a patch update to fix by now.

Hi everyone,

We’re sorry to hear that this has been happening again. For those who confirmed that it’s finally working but eventually happened again, and for those who never got it to work. I’ll send the report to the support team as a request to reopen the bug. I’ll get back here for an update.

Again, we’re sorry for the trouble. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Sincerely,

Kimy

I am having the same issue. Applied chrome remote update and restarted chrome tv. It worked successfully 3 times before finally failing on the fourth try. I can repeat these steps for it work again briefly and then fail again

Hi SwimDad,

Thanks for joining the thread. Based on your description, it seems that your situation is different from the bug that is in discussion here. There was a bug related to this issue, as you can read in this thread. The bug has been fixed, and we’re monitoring those who are still experiencing it. There are users who already confirmed that it worked, but then some reported back that it happened again, while there are users who didn’t get theirs fixed by the latest patch fix.

The nature of the bug is that when you initiate the Google Assistant by pressing and holding the button on the remote, it waits for you to speak the command, and as you say it, it either registers what it heard from you directly on the TV screen but will not react as if it didn’t hear anything, or it would not register anything you said at all as if it didn’t hear you talking. Is this what you’re experiencing? If not, kindly give us more details.

Kimy

Hi there,

Thanks for confirming, @SwimDad. If that’s the case, since most users got theirs working again, I suggest both you and @Todd534 ensure that your firmware is up-to-date. Check to see if there’s an available firmware update. You can also try to do a full clean-up by performing a factory reset and setting it up from scratch to remove any corrupted files or data. Let us know how it goes.

Sincerely,

Kimy
