Have a Yamaha receiver, can't hold down the volume buttons

Everything works perfect on the Google TV remote except for the volume.  I cannot hold down the volume button to adjust the volume.  It only increases/decreases one click.  So if I want to turn it up/down a bunch I have to press the volume buttons multiple times.   I don't have to do this with the Yamaha receiver remote control as the volume buttons work fine on it.   Seems the google remote is not repeating the up/down command to the receiver.    Looks like a bug of some sort.

Same issue here with a new Google Chromecast with Google TV. The Chromecast remote IR is adjusting the volume of my Yamaha RX-D485 only one small step for each key press. Long pressing does not increase the volume any further.

I am switching back to my Fire Stick now. It has no such problems.

My original google tv just became glitchy video wise and eventually stopped producing any picture that was viewable.  I took it back for warranty replacement after only 4 months and now my new unit does not control my Yamaha aventage 3020 like my original did.  As above poster's mention,  can only get one click at a time to change the volume. Here's hoping Google can sort out a fix soon as it's extremely frustrating to have had a perfectly good set up that is now pretty annoying.  1st world problem but I'm certain there would be a fix.

Hey Juni,

The steps did not work and actually caused other members to pick up the same bug. Is there anything that you can do to help?

The same issue with the Yamaha YHT-1840 unit, CEC mode does not work but found IR mode works but I have the same issue as others have faced in that you need to keep clicking the volume button many many times repeatedly to change the volume as it incraments the volume in small amounts.

I reported it to Google via the Google Chromecast with Google TV feedback over a year ago and still no fix, update nor contact from Google about it... A friend has the newer Yamaha RX-V4A reciver and also faces the same issue so this must be very common!

With the default, recievers remote you simply hold down the volume button and it incraments very fast up or down, same with a Logitech 3rd party remote via IR but with the Googles remote, if you hold the volume button down it only incraments 1 volume point at a time... most frustarting... Google please address this!

Same problem here. Holding down the volume button does not send continuous signal to continue lowering volume more than one notch. It does not work on any of several devices I have tried.

@Juni steps did not help. Anything else that you can suggest?

The problem is the Chromecast remote firmware itself. Holding down the volume buttons does not work even for the Chromecast volume directly. Google did not design it that way which is a huge mistake. Even if you set the volume buttons to change the Chromecast volume, you will see holding a button down always only changes the volume one notch. The button does not continue to transmit when held down like every. other remote control does.

We need to complain ti Google about this. so they fix it. Give feedback in the Home app. on your phone.

I think it use to work just fine in the past so I think Google 'changed' something that has broken things and it's been broken for many months since now... Perhaps it's related to the remote firmware? I wonder if we can roll it back and if that might fix the issue...

Just factory reset my Google TV and seems I picked up this bug. Before when I held the volume the Yamaha receiver would increase/decrease the volume with a series of IR pulses when the button was held. After the reset, I can no longer hold the button to increase/decrease volume.

Interesting, I wonder if your remote did not have the updated firmware before you reset it and if the firmware since updated after the reset that might have caused it to stop working because I could also get mine to work well in the past but I've never managed to get it working for a very long time now ... can't believe Google has still not addressed this issue and how long it's been outstanding... they really are VERY poor at after sales support and service!

Hmm. So it actually worked before. I have three and none of them have ever worked with any of the TVs or devices I am using. We need a survey of who it works for. I want to hear from anyone it is working for *now*. I do not want to rely on memory. I have never heard anyone say it is working for them now - that holding down a volume button continues to change the volume.

The user more than likely received a chromecast that had been sitting around in the warehouse for a while, with an older firmware on it. The second he booted it up, the firmware updated and the volume stopped working. I've had chromecasts for a long time, and my remotes originally worked with my Yamaha receiver (among other TVs) flawlessly. Now, not so much. This is definitely a firmware issue that was pushed within the last few years.

The remote that came with the first Chromecast TV I had worked completely fine with my Yamaha. That remote stopped working completely and I bought a replacement which is when this started for me.

That Chromecast completely stopped working and I have bought a new one, with another new remote, that also does not let me hold the volume button.

I believe it's a firmware issue and we aren't able to go far enough back to get to the working firmware anymore.

UPDATE Can't explain why but...today I followed the process of resetting the remote and can now hold down the volume button.

On the remotes and accessories screen the working remote firmware is 22.2

I followed https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/12934376

Taking batteries out... Replacing them etc ...

The reset remote was refusing to pair so I had to do a full power cycle of the Chromecast with 30 seconds off to hopefully do the trick. After pairing it again using my phone to navigate the menus using the Google tv app it paired and works.

It now shows a firmware update is available for the remote.... Going to see if I can avoid the update since I'm enjoying holding down the volume button currently rather than clicking over and over.

I have a feeling though it's going to auto update and break again.

One of first things I know of that reverts to a factory base firmware on reset but seems to be the case.

You must be lucky because I just did exactly what you just said and it didn't work.  The remote did go back to V22.2 but the continuous up/down volume did not work.   Updated it to the latest version and it still did not work.  No idea.

No luck here either 😬

So this issue is still happening for everyone? Is there anything that a community specialist can recommend that isn’t just resetting the remote? Or, is this just something we have to wait for a firmware update for?

Yup this is still an ongoing issue with no update or fixes out still... Google is very close to being useless it seems 😞

So listen to this. I have many 4k chromecasts in my house. The one on the main floor started acting up (putting a green line across the bottom of the tv when using Plex and Emby) and it crashed a few times so I decided to swap it out with another in my house that I dont use as much. Previously the remote for one that was glitching allowed me to press and hold the volume buttons and my Yamaha receiver would go up/down smoothly without having to press the button a million times. After switching chromecasts with one from my bedroom and programming the remote to work with the yamaha receiver in the living room, the volume buttons now needed to be repeatedly pressed (such a pain!!). I looked at the software of both chromecasts and both remotes and they are exactly the same software. I thought, lets pair the old remote with the new one. I did that and now BOTH remotes do not allow me to press and hold the volume button... This makes no sense. I would rather put up with the green line across the bottom of my screen over pressing my volume up/down button a million times (yamaha volumes go in 1/2 increments). Please fix google.

So glad I'm not alone. The IR receiver set up used to work for me too, but it stopped working for me after the electricity to my house went off and on a few days ago. Since then I can no longer long press on the Chromecast Google TV remote to change multiple levels of volume at once. I have to click a bazillion times. I have an AX-V377 Yamaha receiver.

**bleep** how is this problem still not fixed? It's been over a year since I used my google chrome remote with my amp and it's frustrating. The only 'solution' I have is setting the volume to adjust the chrome itself, but that's so janky compared to my actual amp's volume selection and isnt very specific, it's either **bleep**ing loud or silent....

I agree, I really feel Google is becoming a rather useless company now days... I have had another support case open with them for well over a year now on a major bug with Google photo's and nothing has been done to address the issue... Google has become close to being useless at fixing issues and listening to customers... seems they just don't care...

Same issue, volume keys do not repeat with Yamaha RX-V685. Happens with both Google's Chromecast with Google TV  and ONN Hardware. Receiver, Chromecasts, and remotes updated to latest versions

Same issue here in combination with my Rotel Rc-06 preamplifier... It used to work continuously. Roughly a year ago, after a firmware update of the remote, I had to start using multiple presses. Recently, one of the navigation buttons on the remote started acting up so I got a new remote under warranty. Unfortunately it had the same issue with the volume control.
