Kids profile usb storage

BitByteNibble

I’ve been using a kids profile with the Kodi app to play movies loaded on an external hard drive so my kids can watch movies in my van on road trips.  Some time in the last month or so, this broke.  After digging into it quite a bit, it looks like external storage is no longer accessible from the kids profile.  Has anyone noticed this or figured out a workaround?

Hey there BitByteNibble,

I am sorry for the late response on this thread, thank you for being patient! Were you able to get the external apps to work properly? If not, we can look into this. First, make sure your Chromecast is up-to-date on its firmware. Then, see if the external drive works properly on the regular profile first, so we can narrow down the issue to either the drive, or the profile.

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Thanks for the response.  I haven’t been able to get USB storage working on a kids profile.  It worked just fine until the chrome cast did its latest update, and I confirmed that it is all the way up to date.  USB storage still works from a regular profile, just not from Kids.

Also, the USB storage is being used in removable mode to store media, while all apps are loaded to internal storage.  The Kodi app is able to see that the drive is connected, but is only able to view the contents of the drive from a full profile.

Hey there BitByteNibble,

Once again, I apologize for the slow response time. I got into contact with a higher tier of support regarding this issue. He was able to confirm that this functionality was working prior to the Android 12 update. If you don't mind, would you be able to log into the Kid's Profile, recreate the issue, then log into the normal profile, and submit feedback via the Voice Remote? That way, the device logs that are generated will be sent to the Chromecast Engineering team.

I look forward to hearing from you again, and let me know if you have any more questions.

Best regards,

Jeran

I'll see what I can do.  I needed this working for a family road trip over the holidays, so I ended up deleting the kids profile and created a full profile for them in app-only mode with a PIN so they can't install unapproved apps.  I'm not sure when I'll have time to test the Kids profile again.

Hey there BitByteNibble,

It's no problem at all if it's inconvenient to recreate the issue and submit feedback. The main point is that I escalated the issue and confirmed that using a USB storage in a kid's profile is something that did work prior to the Android 12 update. In the meantime, since you were able to work around this issue, do you have any other questions or concerns I can address?

Best regards,

Jeran

Hi BitByteNibble,

How's it going with your device? Let us know if you still need help and the Community will be happy to lend a hand.

Thanks for the follow up.  With the introduction of app-only mode, I think this workaround is working well enough for my use case that I won’t be waiting for a resolution on the initial issue.  Thanks for raising the issue, and for the great support community.

Hey BitByteNibble,

It's our pleasure!  It looks like we can consider this one complete, so I will lock the thread shortly unless I can help out with anything else.

Cheers,
