Max usb ethernet speed

Is there a hardware or software problem on the CCwGTV USB C port that limits wired ethernet speeds to ~350Mbs down? A usb-c to Gigabit ethernet adapter on the Chromecast with Google TV reports a maximum speed of around ~350Mbps.  But the same adapter on a laptop reports ~980Mbs down when connected to the same wire and a Surface book.

I have the ccwgtg Ethernet adapter, and I can only get a maximum of 100 megabytes max. And when I force my Ethernet switch to 1000 megabytes the ccwgtg doesn't recognize the cable. I think there is a software limiter on the Chromecast.

Hi Jeran. Is there a limiter in the ChromeCast that prevents my Gigabit USB to ethernet adapter from reaching close to 1GB speed?

Hey there screed68,

As far as I am aware, the Chromecast itself does not have any settings that limit its own bandwidth usage. However, most routers have an option to limit the amount of bandwidth that devices use on your network. You may need to look up your router online to find the specific setting, for example, "Netgear Bandwidth Control". From there, you should be able to see the Chromecast connected to your network, and set up a limit on there.

Let me know if that helps!

Best regards,

Jeran

So I am using the Cox cable provided router with unlimited data and 1Gb download speeds.  I can't find any reference to bandwidth limits in the configuration.  And I can't imagine they would have a default that prevents me from obtaining the speed and data I'm paying for.  It really appears to be a hardware issue on the Chromecast.

Has anyone been able to achieve over 400Mb download over ethernet with the Chromecast?

Hey there screed68,

I've been doing some research on the subject, and you may be right, as there may be hardware limitations coming into play. With adapters plugging into the Chromecast with Google TV using the USB-C port, even with Gigabit Internet, you wouldn't see speeds hit higher than the 100-400 Mbps, depending on what adapter you use. This is something that would have to be addressed in a future model, since the speeds would be much faster if the Gigabit adapter was installed directly into the Chromecast, and not using the USB-C.

I hope this helps out, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know.

Best regards,
Jeran

Thanks for looking into it.  It sounds like you have confirmed that Chromecast with Google TV does have some limitation that prevents achieving full gigabit speeds with a Gigabit to USB-C internet adapter.  As you know, transfer rates should be plenty fast enough for Gigabit ethernet as the adapter provides Gigabit ethernet speeds to other attached devices.

Do you know if this is a software or hardware limitation of CCWGTV?  If software, I assume it could be fixed in an update, right?

Hey there screed68,

This would be a hardware limitation on the Chromecast with Google TV dongle itself, since every adapter that plugs into the Chromecast dongle is through its USB-C port. The only way to bypass that limitation is if there was an adapter that connected through the Chromecast dongle natively, not through the USB-C port. However, this would either require taking apart the Chromecast with Google TV dongle and directly attaching an adapter, which Google would never condone doing and would more than likely break the device, or waiting for a future model to come out.

I hope that answers your question, and if you had anymore, please let me know!

Best regards,

Jeran
