I did a factory reset on my Chromecast with Google TV trying to troubleshoot why the voice assistant stopped working, which I now know is a wide-spread and yet unresolved separate issue. After going through the setup process again, I re-added my Sony receiver as the device that controls the volume. While the volume controls work the mute button does not. Only one of the tests you go through when setting up a device work for the receiver, so I'm at a loss about why the mute button worked with my receiver before the reset of the Chromecast and the remote but doesn't now

Hi BuckyKat,
Thanks for the reply. Could you try to enable the CEC functions in your receiver’s settings, or at least toggle it off, then on? Do the same on the Chromecast device’s Settings > Display and Sound > HDMI-CEC. Don’t forget to check for available updates, especially now that the Android TV OS build STTL.231114.004 is now up. Let us know how it goes.

Hi folks,
Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. We’re sorry for the delay in response. How did you set the communication between the Chromecast device and the receiver? The IR setup of the remote for third-party devices only controls three functions (power, volume, and input). The mute button isn’t included, as it goes directly to the Chromecast device, which communicates to the connected device via HDMI-CEC. You may check the CEC controls of both devices (Chromecast and receiver).
Let us know how it goes.
Thanks,
Kimy

I have the volume setup as Sony Receiver (IR) and the Chromecast is directly connected to the receiver. I have a second Chromecast in another room and its able to control the volume of a TV and the mute works for it.
If it shouldn't mute the receiver, its very strange that it was able to mute the receiver until I reset the Chromecast.

I did enable CEC on the receiver, but while that didn't work, I did manage to still get mute to work but in a very round-about way.
I also enabled the CEC option on the TV then changed the Chromecast to control the TV's audio, which because of the CEC still controls the receiver's volume but also allows the mute button to work again.

Hello BuckyKat,
Thanks for the update. That’s right! We should’ve anticipated the involvement of the TV since it also has its own CEC functions. But then, it’s great that this has been sorted out. Let us know if you still have other concerns.
Cheers,
Kimy
