Can I control my home with just Sonos and the Google Home app?

Lyphe416

Hello all,

I'm looking to begin using 'hey google' with my smart home and had some very basic questions.
Hope you can assist:

Currently, I have the following:

  • Google Home app on my iPhone.
  • Sonos speakers in all parts of my condo.
  • Nest thermos & cameras.
  • Lutron lights and hub.
  • Eero wifi mesh.

My main questions is this.  Am I already good to go on turning on 'hey google' and using it through my Sonos speakers with the Google Home phone app?  I've been confused about whether I also need a separate google hub of some sort beyond just my phone app.  I don't think so, but it feels like I keep seeing conflicting info on this.

Thank you for any direction and cheers!

So I finally had a chance to try and set this up yesterday.
All works great!

- I use the Google Home app on my iPhone as the only hub.
- My 5 different Sonos are now all connected to Google Assistant and they act as my voice controls.
- I can use GA to control Sonos.
- Lutron's are controlled easily with GA through the Sonos speakers.
- I was pleasantly surprised to find I can ask GA general questions and get full answers.

In short, all works exactly as it should.  Gotta hand it to Google on this.  I waffled between Apple and Google for home, since I have a Mac and iPhone ... but the compatibility and hub features are much better on Google from what I've experienced.

I'm posting all this for anyone else looking for info like I was.
You can close the thread if needed, unless you want to leave it open for somebody else.  I'm good now.

Cheers and ty.

I have almost the same exact setup.
You shouldn’t need a google hub, but I would get a google hub mini (with screen) to almost be a touch screen hub that will show you cams and what is playing, turn lights on and off, etc).
Deff gonna need to download the google home app and add Sonos and Lutron there.

Then

Add your Sonos devices to google home app and assistant.

(I have attached a link with setup and tips and tricks) https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-connect-google-home-to-sonos-speakers-4690001#toc-how-to-set-up-goog...)

my only issue has been trying to control Sonos “groups” with google assistant. When asking google to “play Spotify on Sonos living room speakers, or Group 1” it only plays music from google speakers, not sonos

Hi Free,

So it sounds like I 'don't' need a hub?  I can just use the Google Home app already installed on my phone that I currently use for controlling my Nest cams and Nest thermostats?

If yes, it sounds like I'm ready to go and will test it out this week to see how it works.

Cheers.

That is correct!
let me know how it goes and if you find out anyway to control Sonos group with assistant and home app.

Hi folks,

@Lyphe416, you can control Nest Cameras and Nest Thermostats in the Google Home app on your iPhone or via voice command in your Sonos speakers with the built-in Google Assistant. You can also manage your Lutron smart lights by linking them in the app.

@Free2create, thanks for lending a hand by sharing your experience. To answer your question, Chromecast (1st gen), Bose, and Sonos speakers with Google Assistant don’t support speaker groups, which is why you can't get your Sonos to work with your group. I recommend reaching out to Sonos support about this.

@Fitch, I appreciate the additional input!

Fill me in if you have further concerns.

Lovely

Hi there,

It's been some time since this thread was updated. Does anyone here need assistance?

Cheers,

Kinda.. but it sounds like it’s not possible.
once I have Sonos “groups”established - is there anyway I can control them via Google assist or google hub?

Good timing.

Was going to try and set this up today, but not sure if I have access to the full 'google hub' interface.  I've got Google Home on my iphone, but I don't think the app is the full hub correct?  It doesn't have all the functionality?

Is there a way to use my Mac or iPhone to access the full Google hub?  I don't plan to buy a Google speaker or separate hub.

Thanks for any help.

Hello everyone,

@Lyphe416, the Google Home app provides you with full access to manage and control your smart devices that are set up or linked to your Google Account and can only be installed on Android and iOS devices. If your Sonos speakers have a built-in Google Assistant, you should be able to configure them using the app so you can control them via voice.

In addition, we only have three "Google Hub" which are the Google Nest Hub (1st gen), Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) and the Google Nest Hub Max.

If you have other questions, let me know.

Cheers,

@Lyphe416 - I have Sonos amps that control my in-ceiling speakers.
I grouped my Kitchen, Dining and Living room together (3-amps total - in Sonos app called “Main Living Area”). Is there anyway to control “main living area” from google assistant or hub?
I linked my Sonos account with google, but the “groups” are not showing up, just each amp that controls different rooms in the google home app - I just can’t seem to control via voice control on google hub or assistant

Hi Free2create,

Perfect! Since everything is settled here, we'll mark this as resolved and lock the thread now. Should you need help with any Google Nest devices, feel free to create a new one.

Kind regards,
Alex

Sure are, just give it a try! You can do it right from the Google (not just Google Home) app on your phone. In the Google Home app, you can go to Assistant Settings. You'll want to make sure you see all the devices you plan to control in the Google Home app. If you don't see them, you probably have to log in to your Lutron, Nest, Eero accounts from the Google Home app, first. Do that by "adding" devices.
