Can I set a timer on a device using a smart plug?

I have a pedestal fan that I'm going to get a smart plug for, to add into my Google Home.
Before I purchase, I'm trying to figure out if I can set a timer (say 30 mins) for it to turn off, after I turn it on? I can't see anywhere that this can be done, and seems like a big oversight?

There are a couple of ways to approach this depending on what you want to do and how.  Of course your smart plug must integrate with Google Home and work with voice commands.

Manual by voice

"Hey Google Turn on Smart Plug"

followed by

"Hey Google Turn off Smart Plug in 30 minutes"

-OR-

Just say "Hey Google turn on Smart Plug for 30 minutes"

Routine

You could also create a routine that turns the smart plug on for 30 minutes based on a trigger.  Create a set of actions like Adjust Home Devices - Turn it on, then a Delay Start, then an action Adjust Home Devices - Turn it off.

I might be able to provide specifics if I understand what exactly you are expecting or trying to do.

Good luck!

If you are using the Google Home App, the only thing I can think of is setting up a routine that turns it on and off at certain times, or when you are home or away, etc. for automation. Google assistant generally will not allow you to say "Hey Google, turn one the fan for 30 mins." due to safety reasons.

Awesome! Ok that will work. Basically it's for when I wake up in the middle of the might and need some air, but don't want it on till 7am haha. Perfect! thank you.

There are a few gotchas.  I may have over simplified my response. Oops. You may want to review this post here:

Cant schedule actions for outlets

In summary:

  • You may have to configure the smart plug as a light even though it would actually be a fan
  • It might be better to create a routine that does what your want. (As @BG suggested!)
