Cannot add my Nest Doorbell to my new Home App

SteveRyder
Community Member

I have a wired gen-2 Nest doorbell that I installed using non-gmail credentials. Since then I got the Home App and the Nest hub. The Home App and hub are working well with cameras, smart switches, smart plugs all on my gmail account.

I'm trying to add the Nest doorbell to Home App. I choose add device, New device, Doorbell, I scan the QR code, I get a check mark indicating the QR code was scanned, then nothing. The doorbell device isn't listed.

I'm suspecting the problem might be the non-gmail credentials I initially used setting up my doorbell. Don't see how to change that. Not really sure what the problem is. No error message.

Need support.

It is not possible to have ever installed the new 2nd Gen Google Nest Doorbell using non-gmail credentials, since it works only in the Google Home app with a gmail account.

If you actually have the older Google Nest Hello Doorbell (we have 3 of them), it only gets installed in the Google Nest app (and will then appear in the Google Home app), and you should have migrated your non-gmail Nest Account to a Google Account BEFORE you installed your Nest Hub and other cameras, smart switches, and smart plugs in the Google Home app (see the link below). However, since your Google Account is already being used as a Nest Account, you no longer can migrate your Nest Account to your Google Account.

In this situation, this is what Google Nest says you should do; I can't vouch for the instructions because we haven't had to do this:

Use the Google Account that’s linked to another Nest Account.

1. Sign into the Nest app with your Nest Account.
2. Disconnect all your devices. [In your case, it seems this is just your Google Nest Hello Doorbell.]
3. Sign out of the Nest app.
4. Select Sign in with Google sign in [in the Nest app] with the linked Google Account.
5. Reconnect your devices.  [That is, your Google Nest Hello Doorbell.]

In addition to the above instructions, the link below has other information about moving from a Nest Account to a Google Account.

In the Google Nest app, is the name of your Google Nest "home/structure" (which displays on the initial screen under the word "Home" and alternates with your local temperature, and which contains your doorbell) the same as the name in the Google Home app of your Google Nest "home/structure" (which displays in the upper left corner of the newly updated Google Home app and which contains your other Google Nest devices).

The name of your Google Nest "home/structure" also displays at the top of the home.nest.com and home.google.com websites, and should be the same on both sites.

By the way, you should probably delete your screen captures from your post, since they show your email address.

Thanks for the excellent advice. You're right, I actually do have the Nest Hello. I followed the link to Migrate your Nest Account to a Google Account

I followed the instructions. Log on to Nest app with the old non-gmail credentials. Disconnect the doorbell device. Sign out of Nest app. Logon to Nest app using Gmail account. Add the doorbell. So now I can see my doorbell camera in the Nest app with the gmail credentials. Should be a slam dunk now to add the doorbell to Google Home app.

In Home app ...

 - add device from "Works with Google" , Nest, doesn't recognize the gmail credentials.

 - add device from "New device" , doorbell, "other nest doorbells" wants to use the Nest app, Nest app opens showing my doorbell camera, in settings, account, "migrate to Google" is no longer an option,

I still can seem to get my Nest Hello device listed in my Google Home app list of devices.

You were so helpful with the first response. I hope you can help again.

As I said earlier, the older Google Nest Hello Doorbell (we have 3 of them), gets installed in the Google Nest app, and will then appear in the Google Home app. If you are logging onto the Google Nest app with the same Google Account you are using to log into the Google Home app, and if your doorbell is in the same Google Nest "home/structure" in both apps, you should see your doorbell in the Google Home app automatically.  Note that the name you assigned to the Google Nest "home/structure" displays on the initial screen in both apps.

The "Works with Google" option is for non-Google Nest devices.

When you say should appear automatically, I'm not sure this is happening. See from the 3 screen prints, I'm using the same gmail account in Nest and Home app. Also see the devices listed in Home app, I have several devices but I don't see the doorbell.Nest appNest appHome appHome appHome app devicesHome app devices

That was the answer. I checked the home/structure on both apps and got it working. Thanks for sticking with me!
