Detecting smoke but there’s no smoke

Any suggestions when my Google nest kept alerting me that there is smoke but there isn’t any? I took it down but it’s still beeping. It’s the middle of the night and it goes off every 10 minutes or so. I removed the thermostat but I’m not sure what happened

Hi Tpre25,

Thank you for reaching out to our community.

I understand that your Nest Protect is triggering smoke alerts without any smoke present and that it continues to beep every 10 minutes, even after being disconnected and after you removed the thermostat. I appreciate the steps you’ve already taken to troubleshoot the device. I know how disruptive this is, especially in the middle of the night. Don’t worry—I’m here to help.

To get started, please provide a bit more information by answering the following questions:

  • Is your Nest Protect a 1st or 2nd gen model? Is it the wired or battery-powered version? You can use this help article as a reference: How to tell which Nest Protect you have
  • How many Nest Protect devices do you have?
  • How far from the router is the Nest Protect that is reporting the unexplained alarm?
  • What is the current color of the light ring on the device?
  • How long was the device working normally before this issue started?
  • Have there been any recent changes to your environment, such as a change in Wi-Fi network or recent outages?
  • Which Wi-Fi frequency band are you using for the Nest Protect (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz)?
  • What country are you located in?
  • Are you using the original batteries in the Nest Protect?
  • Did you check the Nest Protect's battery level?
  • Did you receive a specific push notification in the Nest or Google Home app when the alarm triggered?
  • Can you provide more details about the room where the device was installed (e.g., near a kitchen, bathroom, or dusty area)?
  • Could you please clarify why you mentioned removing your thermostat during this process?

Please reply with these details so we can continue troubleshooting and find a solution for you.

Best regards,

Virna
