Google nest video door bell(battery)

I live in the high desert and had my video doorbell installed one year ago, today it went offline.  I have never needed to charge this doorbell since it was installed, I did not even know it could be charged.

ADT was no help, neither was the rep at google who I could not understand.

My question is why after one year would I suddenly need to charge the battery?  We have not had any power outages or surges.

any ideas what might me going on or what I should be checking?

Which doorbell do you have, the Google Nest Battery Doorbell or the Google Nest Wired Doorbell?  They are shown here: https://store.google.com/product/nest_doorbell?hl=en-US

The Google Nest Battery Doorbell CAN be installed wired to a doorbell transformer and chime, in which case it still runs on battery power, but is always being trickle-charged.  If that is the case with your doorbell, I don't know why it would suddenly need charging after a year unless the battery is failing.  There are issues with cold weather charging (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/11830989) but I don't think they'd apply in your situation. Are there any issues with your transformer or your doorbell wiring?

If you have the Google Nest Battery Doorbell and it is NOT wired, I don't know how it would be possible to go a whole year without charging it.

The Google Nest Wired Doorbell does have a small internal battery, but it is only used to power the doorbell during the instant when power is diverted to ring your internal doorbell chime, and this internal battery cannot be charged.

Hi thanks for answering! I have the google nest video doorbell battery which is connected to the house doorbell wiring.  The home is brand new, just off the one year warranty and suddenly now it does not seem to have kept the doorbell charged sufficiently after one year.  The google rep I spoke to said it’s the heat that’s causing this but why suddenly after a year? It is typically hot in the desert nothing new.  Do you think heat causes issues with the trickle charging? Until today I did not know anything about this doorbell or that it has an internal battery.  Thinking back I don’t recall seeing a battery symbol in the top right corner of the video screen for this device but now I am seeing this.

Google Nest does not document any problems with trickle charging when it is hot, as they do for charging when it is cold, but I guess that is a possibility. (I wonder why ADT installed the battery version if it is able to be wired.)

I'm just another Google Nest customer, and we have wired 1st gen Google Nest Hello Doorbells.

It is low voltage wire that goes from doorbell to chimes and transformer.  I was in the middle of a big move in and was very distracted during installation and did not pay enough attention or ask enough questions.  They also are a high pressure company and say things that perhaps are not in their contract.  I guess I wonder the most why it suddenly only recognizes the battery as its power source.  I guess now I have to hire an electrician to troubleshoot the wires to be sure they are providing power to the doorbell and that the transformer only a year old has not failed.  Then I have to approach google to see if they will honor the warranty on the device since I did not purchase it from them directly.  What a cluster.

Hi @Olsongogo

Thank you so much for contacting this community! I understand that you've been having an issue with your Nest Doorbell (battery). It's been working properly for a year, but it has now stopped functioning because the device indicates that it has no charge. I can see why this is frustrating, especially since the hot desert climate can be a major factor in the device not working properly. I appreciate that you took the time to contact a Google representative to try and resolve this battery issue, and I'm happy to help you get this sorted out.

To provide you with the most accurate troubleshooting steps possible, I need to check the battery status of your device. Please follow the instructions below and send me a photo.

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Verify that the Google Account shown at the top right is the one linked to the doorbell.
  • Tap Favorites or Devices.
  • Select the camera from the list of devices.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Under Device features, tap Battery.

@MplsCustomer, thank you so much for the information about the possible causes that can affect this device!

Please feel free to share any additional details you think might be relevant.

Best regards,
Eduardo
