Issue with Google home lamp

I have a lamp that is connected to my Google home

I have this categorized as an outlet because the app doesn't allow you to separate different light groups.

I don't understand why you can't separate lights because there are many different rooms that have many different lights and you shouldn't have to turn all of them off or favorite them or hold down to get them separated.

When I say turn off all the lights in the house I'm wanting everything categorized as a light to turn off.

As I mentioned, my lamp is considered an outlet. The lamp turns off. I don't understand why an outlet would turn off with all the lights.

I asked Gemini and it said this was a "user-friendly feature," since it's assuming that because it's called a lamp it should be turned off.

Why is this a feature? Is this an oversight?

Is there going to be a way to separate light groups? And why does Google home think it knows better than what I've told it a device is?

  • Now, on your first issue with separating lights into individual tiles in the app you can add each light of a room to Favourites with names that corresponds to each Room.

You could also add a widget to your home screen (Android) with individual lights.

  • For your second issue with voice control, (I'm still using Google Assistant on Home speakers) the plug (socket) shouldn't turn on if it's DEVICE TYPE is a "SOCKET" and shouldn't be included in the lights group for that Room.

Google has VERY recently (March 2, 2026) updated the Google Home app where...

"Better targeting for room and whole-home queries, including unassigned devices. For instance, "turn off the kitchen" now only affects lights, and unassigned devices are no longer incorrectly grouped with general room requests."

I know I can change from the room and I have it saved as a favorite, but shouldn't it be possible to do that directly in the room itself on my phone? It shouldn't require me to hold down and use the group feature.Device grouping shouldn't be done automatically. It should be done based on what I say.

For the second issue, it's labeled as an outlet, but it's actually called lamp. When I asked Gemini about it, it said it knows it's an outlet but since it's called a lamp, it's treating it like a light.

It is what it is with the app until they change it. I know A LOT of people have complained about it.

But another option is using the "Lights" page. This is very handy as you're not scrolling endlessly through dozens of other devices.

It's a drop-down tile instead of push and hold.
