Just curious about the recent need for extreme specificity...

Hey all, this is my first post, as I've never needed any sort of help with these cool little gadgets. Has anyone else noticed that within the last month or so, you need to be EXTREMELY specific when asking what up until recently was a simple question? I can't just ask my Google home mini "What's the temperature?" anymore! I need to ask it "What is the temperature in the exact city I live in?" now. I used to be able to just say "Hey Google, turn on the radio." and it would play the last radio station that I had running, even if it was days since I listened to the radio last.

I'm curious what the deal is with the recent update. Anyone else now finding these things a lot more complicated to use than they actually should be?! I'm sure I'm not the only one, am I? I'm tempted to get rid of the 6 Google home minis that I've got in the house in most of the rooms.

Hi ShadNuke,

Thanks for posting in the community! I'm sorry to hear that your Google Home devices aren’t able to respond to your first questions without being more specific. Help’s here!

In the meantime, I’d suggest the following steps:

  • Check for updates to the Google Home app and your mobile device's software.
  • Try asking for the weather in a simple way, and after that, try using the command “Repeat the question” to verify if the Google Assistant provides you with the same command that you used.
  • Check if the language settings in the Google Home app are correct. Refer to this article for guidance: Change the language of Google Assistant.
  • Try one more time to give the basic command and share a screenshot of the Home app’s Home activity history to check if there’s a recorded instance where the device is unlinked by going to the Google Home app > Settings > under Home features > tap Privacy > Home Activity.
    • Identify the most recent command that generated a failed response.
    • Select Details below your Assistant Query (this will expand out the details).
    • Tap the Play button on the query card to confirm from My Activity what the speaker or display heard at the time the issue occurred.
  • Restart your Google Nest speakers one by one. For reference, you can check out this article: Reboot Google Nest or Home speaker or display.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
