My phone (pixel 5a) responds to my "hey Google" prompts instead of my Google nest hubmy Google

This is a recent development. My hub used to respond to my commands now my phone does. I can be next to the hub with my phone across the room, but the phone is what responds. The nest hub will hear my commands and have a message pop up on the screen saying another device responded.

My hub is set up to the highest sensitivity. It didn't used to be this way, but it's been happening over the past week.

Any tips on how to fix this short of disabling assistant on my phone?

Hi Thikthird,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community.

If you’re near your Google Home device and phone, only Google Home should respond to "Hey Google." Both devices may wake up, but your phone should go back to sleep.  Check the steps below for guidance.

Step 1: Update your Google app version

  1. On your phone, open the Google app Search Icon.
  2. At the bottom right of the Home screen, tap More More and then Settings and then About.
  3. Look for the version number at the top.
  4. If your version is below 6.5, go to the Google app page, then tap Update.

Step 2: Add the same account to both devices

See which account you use on Google Home

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Touch and hold your Google Nest or Google Home device.
  3. At the top right, tap Device settings and then Recognition & sharing and then Linked account(s).
  4. Check the Google Account(s) linked to this specific device.

Add the account to your phone

  1. On your phone, open the Google app Search Icon.
  2. At the bottom right of the Home screen, tap More More.
  3. To the right of your email, tap the down arrowDown Arrow and then Add another account.
  4. Follow the steps to add your account. After you add the account, you don’t need to stay signed in.

Step 3: How to use "Hey Google"

Talk to Google Home:

Say "Hey Google." (Your phone shouldn’t respond).

Talk to your phone:

Important: The languages you can use depend on the device. Learn which languages work on your device.

  • When you’re at home:
    1. Open the Google app Google app.
    2. In the search bar, tap Speak Voice search.
    3. Say a command or ask a question.
  • When you're not at home, say "Ok Google."

Check this link for more details.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Juni

Hello Thikthird,

Understood. You can try disabling the Google Assistant on your phone using these steps:

  • On your Android phone or tablet, say "Hey Google, open Assistant settings."
  • Alternatively, open the Google Assistant app Assistant and say, “Assistant settings.”
  • Under "All settings," tap General.
  • If you don’t find “General,” first tap View all settings or See all Assistant Settings.
  • Turn off Google Assistant.

If the issue persists, give resetting your Google Nest Hub a try to see if that helps.

Regards,
Alex

i'd prefer not to have to disable assistant on my phone, as i use it regularly on my phone. is there no way for phone to realize it needs to take a backseat and let my hub handle things when i'm at home?

Hi there,

Usually if both devices hear the hotword, your Nest Hub should only respond. Have you tried resetting your Nest Hub?

Thanks,

Alex

Hey Thikthird,

We appreciate your efforts. If you have two or more Google Assistant enabled devices, they’ll all light up and listen to your query. Usually only one will respond, the one that you’re nearest to but occasionally both will do. While our algorithm doesn't work 100% of the time, please send your feedback via voice commands.

Let us know if we can assist with anything else otherwise, we'll lock this thread after 24 hours.

Best regards,
Alex
