NEST THERMOSTAT 2ND GEN please remove the thermostat from its base, then reattach it

this is now the second of my 3 nest thermostats to do this. i resolved this issue originally because i didnt have the time nor the patience to deal with it, by opening the box to a brand new thermostat intended for a different location and now both units display the same message again and again.

"please remove the thermostat from its base, then reattach it" they are both nest 2nd gen smart thermostats and they were purchased at the same time from home depot. considering how much these things costed at the time this is entirely unacceptable. i figured at first maybe the first one was defective, but for it to now occur with the second one as well? now it makes me question if the thermostat itself is bad or if it is the base.

it runs both my hydronic heating loop as well as my forced air conditioning units. Y1, G, Rc, W1, Rh. ive tried swapping around the rc and rh wires thinking its the transformers, but to no avail. and when i short the rh and w1 wires my boiler kicks on so thats certainly not the case.

Hi @bd7990,

Thanks for reaching out to the community page. I'm sorry to hear you're getting the error message “Please remove the thermostat from its base, then reattach it” on your Nest Learning Thermostat 2nd gen. No worries, let's work together to get this fixed. To help me with that, I have a few questions for you:

  • When did you install your Nest Learning Thermostat 2nd gen?
  • Are the wires flat on the base?
  • Is the Nest Learning Thermostat 2nd gen display properly seated on the base?
  • Is there any blinking light on your Nest Learning Thermostat 2nd gen?

I appreciate the information shared and your troubleshooting efforts. Please let me know the answers to these questions, and I'll be happy to help you further.

Regards,
Jonathan
