Nest Battery Not Holding Charge

gmarkoutsas
Community Member

I own two Nest Thermostats.  One of my units recently went dead on me.  I plugged it into a cable and it powered back on but only for a short period of time.  I then began reading threads that it could be the furnace or the power supply so I thought to plug it directly into my other NEST cradle only to discover is the unit itself that is not holding a charge and not the power supply or furnace.  The reason I know this, the other unit plugged in to the malfunctioning units cradle is working just fine.

The unit is only a few years old, so I'm wondering if the battery is just completely depleted - if so, is there a way to change the battery or do I now need to invest in a new unit?

Hello gmarkoutsas,

I'm sorry to hear you're having an issue with your Nest Thermostat that won't hold its charge. I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

The Wi-Fi connection is unstable, the connection between the thermostat and the router has interference, and it may have power issues that have been overlooked for a long time. These are some of the possible reasons why your Nest Thermostat drains its battery. To isolate:

  • How far away is the thermostat from the router?
  • Are you getting any wiring reports or message codes in its settings?
  • Do you have a zoned system?
  • Do they have a common wire connection to provide adequate power?
  • Please gather its power readings in the Technical Info settings.

I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,
Mark

Hey there,

Checking back in — how's it going? To better diagnose your thermostat's behavior, please let us know more about it with the questions above so we can move forward.

Thanks,

Mark

The nest is still malfunctioning. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Looks like I need to replace it.

Now it won't even turn on even when I directly plug it into a charging cord. Is there some kind of warranty on these things. It's not that old.

Hi gmarkoutsas,

I know it has been a while, and I'm sorry to hear the issue still persists. Let's sort this out.

Hey Mark.   I am having a similar problem.  I have 2 Nest Thermostats. First one is a 5 wire set up and works fine. Second one is a 2 wire (W1 & RH). The Nest internal battery is only holding a charge for 24 hours. Both have been installed for 8 months and we’re working fine for 7 months. I think the internal battery is bad. I would like a replacement.

Hi everyone,

@Dowro07, thanks for visiting the Google Nest Community, we wanted to look deeper into your case. Please answer the following:

  1. What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  2. What is the make and model of your HVAC?
  3. How far away is the thermostat from the router?
  4. Are you getting any wiring reports or message codes in its settings?

Let's gather power readings of the Nest Thermostat. Follow the steps below:

For the Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E:

  1. Press the thermostat ring to bring up the Quick View menu.
  2. Turn the ring to Settings and press to select.
  3. Turn the ring to Technical Info and press to select.

For the Nest Thermostat 2020:

  1. Tap the touch bar to bring up the Menu view.
  2. Slide your finger down to Settings, then tap to select.
  3. Slide your finger to Equipment > Power Info.

I look forward to your response.

Thanks for the help here, Mark and Zoe.

Best,

Renz

My nest learning thermostat randomly disconnected from my wifi 2 months ago, will not reconnect or even recognize any network. Now it won't hold a charge either on the base or by USB. The entire unit quit on us on the coldest weekend of the year! Is there a replacement option? We have had this unit for less than a year!

Hi TrishaD,

I'm sorry for the trouble this may have caused you. To confirm, in what country are you located? How long did you charge your Nest Learning Thermostat to a USB charger?

Thanks,

Jenelyn

My nest 3nd has been in  almost seven years. Recently there was a low battery problem, the USB battery could not be charged, but it did not show a black screen. Do I need to change the battery? Or contact customer service directly? Is there a customer service number?

I’m in the same boat one unit works, the other conked out.  I regret buying this “smart” device.  My AC keeps cycling on and off with no way for me to stop it.  Spare me how this saves ANY kind of energy.  Reading the non helpful replies to an obvious crappy product makes my blood boil.  Will be trashing Google nest on every retail site until this is fixed.  Hopefully the contractor who installed this brings me a new unit.  Waste of money!!!

I also have 2 gen3 nest learning thermostats. About a week ago the upstairs unit stopped working. It sometimes turns on for about 30 seconds and then says it has to shut down because the battery is low. I removed the unit and plugged it into a usb charger for 3-4 hours. When I reattached it to the base it turns on for less than a minute and then shuts down because the battery is low. If I attach it to the base for the other unit I have the same issue.  I can attach the downstairs unit to the upstairs base and everything works fine. It seems like the upstairs unit has a bad battery. Both units are about 9 months old. Is there a way to get a replacement unit under warranty?

Same problem here but with 2 gen 1 thermostats. Able to get unit back up and running and on line for a few hours after charging via cable. Don’t even know if I have this c wire but- how do I tell?  Have had these 10 years plus. Please help.

Hello @Lesliep

Thanks for posting in the community. I apologize for the inconvenience you are having with your Nest thermostat.

I understand you are having issues with the thermostat's battery, but no worries; let's work together on it.

First of all, please share the following information:

  • What type of Nest thermostat do you have?
  • When did the issue first occur?
  • Is the thermostat's display seated properly?
  • Are all the wires of your thermostat seated firmly in its terminals (with no loose or exposed wires)?

Once you share this information, we can gather the right information to make your device work as expected.

Thanks in advance,

Catheryn.

I'm having big issues with my nest thermostat it won't charge and is stuck in the on/off loop, I've tried ALL of the trouble shooting tips and nothing works, I need a replacement and it's still in warranty, it's only about 3 months old, thinking of asking for a refund and going to a different manufacturer, I'm unable to turn on my heating or hot water so I want this resolved today

I've gone through 2 Nest E's in two days. Both faulty and both not charging.

So far, my only conclusion is these are not well made and unreliable. Should be getting a third on Saturday but not confident it will work.
