Nest Guard won't finish updating software

I purchased a Nest Secure Alarm System a little over 3 years ago. It has worked fine until last night. The Nest Guard device will not finish updating software. A blue light ring keeps pulsing, and a voice says, "Finishing up. This might take a minute." This procedure has been going on now for over 12 hours. The Nest Guard is unresponsive. I have tried everything to gain control of the Nest Guard. I have held down the number 2 and the number 5 buttons. I have removed the Nest Guard from my alarm system. I have tried reinstalling the Nest Guard. But nothing has worked. I keep getting the pulsing blue light and the voice saying, "Finishing up. This might take a minute." Does anyone have any suggestions for restoring the Nest Guard to its normal working state? Thank you for your consideration. Incidentally, I have 3 outdoor Nest cameras that continue to work fine.

I am having the same exact issue. My Nest Guard started doing this last night, and has been saying, "Finishing up. This might take a minute." Every few minutes for the past 20 hours. I have also tried the same things as you with no luck. Hopefully someone can recommend a solution soon.

Update: Out of desperation, I unplugged my Nest Guard, and waited about 12 hours for the battery to completely die. When I plugged it back in, the update finished quickly and my Nest Guard is now functioning properly.

Thank you for your comments. I am glad that you were able to get the Nest Guard finally to function properly. I tried the same thing a few times. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. Since Google has discontinued the Nest Secure Alarm System, I have decided to go ahead and replace the Nest Secure system with another manufacturer's alarm system. Thank you again for your comments.

Hi folks,

Muldrek, thanks for posting and we appreciate your time in providing the Community the steps that reset your Nest Guard to its default settings — it's a big help.

alkay, we're sad to see you go. We hope we can make it up to you in the future. We're always here to help if you ever change your mind. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns as I will be locking this in 24 hours.

Hey JT,

Same thing is happening to me. It keeps saying “Finishing up, this might take a minute” and nothing ever happens. It’s been 1 week. I’ve tried holding 2 button but that doesn’t trigger anything. Holding button 5 restarts it, but gets stuck in the same loop. Is this a replacement situation?

I finally gave up.  Since Google has discontinued the Nest Secure Alarm System, I decided to go ahead and replace the Nest Secure system with another manufacturer's alarm system. I need a home alarm system that I can depend on. I do plan to keep my outside Nest doorbell and security cameras. However, I migrated them from the Nest App to the Google Home App. When I did, I could not get the cameras to appear in Google Home. After spending two days trying everything to get them to appear in Google Home, I somehow managed to get them to appear again in the Nest App. So, I can access them through the Nest App. If you have not already migrated your account from the Nest App to Google Home, I recommend that you leave your cameras in the Nest App. I have noticed that others have had problems getting Google Home to recognize their Nest devices on Google Home when they have migrated from the Nest App to Google Home. It appears to me that Google has some problems with customers migrating from the Nest App to Google Home.

But is there a fix? The same thing is happening to me. My Yale lock system will not work without it.

I have the same issue.  I unplugged for a day and when I plugged it back in, it did the same thing.  I also cant do the factory reset with holding down the 2 key

As I stated in an earlier post, since Google no longer provides the Nest Alarm System, I gave up and have gone with another company's do-it-yourself alarm system. Google still sells the Nest Security Cameras, but they apparently stopped providing the Nest Alarm System. Incidentally, if you have Nest Security Cameras and have not already migrated to the Google Home app, I recommend that you not try to migrate to the Google Home app. I was not able to get the Google Home app to recognize my Nest cameras, and finally after many hours of trying various things, I was able to get the original Nest app to work again.
