Nest: HVAC Monitoring Alerts

laurier
Community Member

I received an HVAC Monitoring Alert from Nest/Google Home which says:

"Your system briefly stopped heating your home several times" and

From {Date} to {Date} your heating system briefly stopped heating your home 10 times.  Then it lists the 4 most recent events.  Where can I go to view all 10 events?  (and any prior events)

Thanks!

Hello laurier,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry.

If Google Nest has repeatedly noticed that your heating system appears to have stopped heating your home for a while in the middle of the heating cycle, you'll get this alert. Data on the instances where the recorded indoor temperature dropped momentarily while the thermostat was instructing your heating system to heat your home is used to pinpoint these instances.

Were you able to find the report history? You can find these in the Nest app's Message option, located on the top-left hand corner of the home page. Also, the History tab is on the bottom-right corner of the Google Home app.

Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I have not been able to find this history.  I haven't received the alerts in a while (thankfully), so it's possible the two sources you mention have "cleared" from both of those locations.  But, would they include the FULL history of when the system stopped heating?  Or just a history of when I was alerted?  I am looking for a history of when the system stopped heating.  The alerts mention 10+ times that the system stopped heating, but only provide day/time details on 4 of them.  I would like to see the day/time details of all of them.

Thanks,

Laurie

Hey there,

It's good to hear that you haven't received the same alert. To be sure, could you please tell me the Nest Thermostat model you have?

Also, in the Google Home app. Recent events show the last 5 events that happened in your home in the past 7 days. Older events are in Home history. From Home History shows the events in your home in the past 60 days only.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Mark.  My Nest product # is Nest Learning Thermostat T200577

I had a heating failure this past Sunday (March 5th).  The temperature was set to 69, the house was heating, the temperature was 68, and the furnace failed.  During the one-hour timeout, the house temperature dropped to 66, then the furnace reset and the heat came back on and has been operating normally since.  However, when I go to:

  • Nest Messages, it says: "No Messages: You have no messages"
  • Google Home, it says: For the past 60 days it says "No events recorded" every day

Per my original post, I haven't been notified about these failures previously until there are 10+ of them.  But I'm hoping to find a way to see each individual one, and not have to wait for 10 of them to only see a slice of the data (i.e. the 4 that are included in the email).  Especially since my issue is so sporadic.  Any help in pointing me to the individual failure records/data would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Laurie

Hi laurie,

Thanks for letting me know; let's see more of what's going on.

Could you please check your thermostat's power readouts? Go to the Technical Info settings and select Power. Also, check if your thermostat is showing any wiring reports or message codes under the Equipment settings.

I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Sure, for Technical info, I see:

  • Battery: 3.864V
  • Voc: 34.59V
  • Vin: 27.47 V
  • lin: 40 mA (i)

For Equipment Settings, I see:

  • Equipment sensed on W1 - Rh (and nothing else)

Let me know if any other information would be helpful.

Hello there,

Thanks for checking it out. Additional questions to isolate: when did you install your thermostat? Have you experienced any power-related issues lately? Also, I found an article about how the common wire works with thermostats. Installing it might help to avoid power issues.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I installed my thermostat in 2014, and have not experienced any power related issues.  I feel like we've gotten off topic though.  I am certain I have an issue with my furnace.  However, I am unable to see the details of when my "system briefly stopped heating my home" via the Nest and Home apps as I believe I am supposed to.  And seeing these details (when, for how long, etc) will aid me in the diagnostic of the furnace issue.  Can you help me debug the issue where I am only receiving occasional email notifications about the "system briefly not heating" vs being able to see a list of those instances?

Thanks,

Laurie
