Nest e thermostat running fan only

Joseph64

We recently had a nest e thermostat installed and we can run the ac and heat no problem. I can hear and feel the fan blowing during these two processes and can also tell the air intake is working too. My question is when I run the fan only (no heat, no ac) I do not hear or feel the fan blowing nor the air intake, but I do see the fan symbol on the app and thermostat showing the fan is going. Is the fan that quiet or should we be feeling it blow in the vents when set to fan only?

thank you

Hello Joseph64,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry. I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

Could you please try to run a system test for your fan? Go to your actual thermostat's Equipment settings, then continue and select Test. Choose the fan to run. Check if it's running outside and if there's air blowing on the vents.

If it works, restart your thermostat by pressing and holding its screen for 10 seconds until it shuts down to restart. Then, try to run the fan independently.

Please let me know if that helps or if the issue still persists.

Regards,

Mark

Hey there,

I'm checking back in. Were you able to do the steps above? I'd be glad to hear from you, and I'd like to make sure everything is working.

Mark

Hi,

I ran  the fan only test and still did not feel any air blowing so I had a tech from the company that installed our hvac and nest system come out and the tech agreed no air was blowing in the fan only setting. The tech also stated the outside fan should not be blowing while the fan only setting is on (a previous google response said the outside fan should be blowing. The tech will return this week to hopefully resolve our issue. Thank you for your response

Hi again, the tech came out and fixed the fan only issue. A wiring issue that the fan only ran okay while thermostat was set to cool setting (even if the AC was not running) but for whatever reason when the thermostat was set to heat (even if the heat was not running) the fan only option did not work. So overall now the fan only setting is working as fan only. It’s great. Side note- in a earlier response from Google I was told the outside fan should be running while the fan only was going, but the tech said the outside fan should not be running while set to fan only, and in our case, the outside fan does not run while the inside fan only is running. Thank you again for your follow up

The Nest E thermostat has a fan-only mode, which allows you to circulate air in your home without heating or cooling it. When you activate the fan-only mode, you should be able to hear and feel the fan blowing air through your vents. However, the intensity of the airflow can vary depending on your HVAC system's configuration and the setting of the fan speed.

If you are not hearing or feeling any air movement when the fan is running, it could be an indication that there may be an issue with the fan itself or with the ductwork in your home. It is also possible that the fan is running at a very low speed, which may not be noticeable.

You may want to check the settings on your thermostat to ensure that the fan is set to run at a higher speed. Additionally, you could try placing your hand over a vent to see if you can feel any air movement when the fan is running. If you are still unable to detect any air movement, you may want to contact a professional HVAC technician to inspect your system and determine if there are any issues.

Hello everyone,

I'm sorry for the late reply. I know it has been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

Thanks for your input, @sasmue89a.

@Joseph64 and @Onset, how's it going with your Nest Thermostats? Have you managed to check the fan control settings? Let us know if you need more help.

Hi, yes it is resolved. Turned out to be an installation wiring issue that affected the fan when it was set to Heat setting only. The fan worked on Cool setting but for whatever reason the fan only did not run on heat. The technician made the needed wiring correction. Thank you for checking
