New Yale Lock with Matter not working with Google Home automations

CurtisDChilds

I have the new Yale Lock with Matter all set up and it is working through the Google Home app.  I can use the app to lock and unlock as needed.  The one thing that is not working is having an automation that will lock the lock automatically based on time of day.  My sons will come home late sometimes and forget to lock the door.  I want an automation that will automatically lock the door at 1am.  I am able to create the automation but it does not lock the lock.  Any suggestions?  I have the Nest Hub Max on our wifi system so I am not sure why this isnt working, again especially since the lock DOES work in the google home app, just not the automation.

Hi CurtisDChilds,

Thank you for reaching out to the community. I see you’re having trouble running an automation with the Google Home app and the new Yale Lock with Matter; specifically, you want the device to lock the door at 1 AM. I understand how important it can be for you. Let’s work together to find a solution.

Currently, this option isn’t available. We’re always looking for ways to improve, so please consider sharing your insights and experiences by submitting them to the feedback form. This will allow us to improve in future updates.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Regards,

Byron

Please make automated locking an available option. The feedback page linked does not have an option to give feedback for a Yale locks.

You are saying that this option is not currently available, but in the Google home app it shows that a lock feature is supported for automations.  This is using the native Google Home automation workflow that pulls in available "Actions" for your given smart home devices. This is very misleading for customers like myself and everyone in this thread who tried to set up an automation and realized that it doesn't work at all.

This needs to be delivered as a feature enhancement to support locking a smart lock through a timed automation.  This is bare bones functionality that a smart lock needs to support in 2026 and is kind of ridiculous that this wasn't delivered as part of the original product

Additionally, the currently supported auto-lock timers are WAY too aggressive to be used.  The maximum amount of time is 2 mins.  It really should support additional time windows like 5 min or 10 min to give more time (like unloading groceries etc)

@ByronP, what do you mean it's not an option?  It's absolutely an option in the app, and we can set up automations with the new locks.  However, when the automation runs, it won't lock the lock.  This appears to be a bug and should be addressed.

I have the same issue.  The lock works fine but automations do not work.  You can create the automation but it does not lock the door. The lock is great otherwise. Is this a known issue that will be corrected?

Same issue here.  I woke up a few mornings thinking I must have forgot to run the bedtime automation but it turns out that this lock just doesn't work with automations for some reason.  I can manually lock and unlock in the home app but automations all fail.

From what I can tell lock or unlock is a cecure action.  Note that using Google voice assistant requires you to enter PIN.  I think this is why you can’t automate it.  Bad on Googles part to allow a non functional automation to be created.  Since this runs with Matter, I connected it to Apple Home as well.  With Apple, I can lock/unlock with Siri with no PIN since authentication is done with Face ID.  Automation to lock the door also works just fine

Any updates for this topic, it seems this is a consistent problem across the lock, not something only affecting a few of us?

I am successful with one-touch lock/unlock, however all automations fail, there is little provided anywhere to advise me it fails, or why.

If I try and use Gemini, it prompts for a passcode, if I provide the passcode it fails with a "communication error" generic and unhelpful what to do next.

I have 30 days to return, without automation I definitely will not be keeping this lock.

Lastly, I struggle with the security posture of automation support for unlock, Apple HomeKit seems to support and take a different view. Most of the lock manufacturers seem to have some amount of Bluetooth or some other method of touchless unlocking, my hands are full, unlock the door. My phone is secure enough for my Credit Cards, my Passkeys, but not to open my door.

I'm still waiting for a fix for this. Lock does it not lock when used as part of an automation, e.g., like the bedtime routine. It's set up correctly and simply doesn't do anything. Old Nest x Yale lock worked fine.

@ByronP, can you offer any stops updates on the status of this functionality? A smart lock without this basic function seems pretty useless. Especially because the documentation says it works worth automations.
