Google Nest Doorbell Needs RTSP – Here’s Why
I love my Nest Doorbell. Great video, reliable notifications, and the Google Home integration is seamless. But there’s one huge thing missing that’s honestly making me consider switching: no RTSP support.
Why does this matter? Because RTSP lets you stream video locally. It means I could:
View and record footage on my NAS or NVR
Use it with Frigate or Home Assistant
Keep my cameras useful even if the internet goes down
Not rely on a paid cloud subscription just to access recordings
Right now, Nest locks everything behind the cloud. No local stream, no backup, and no way to integrate with open-source tools. Even Google’s own Nest Hub relies on cloud to show the feed!
Other brands are starting to get this—Reolink, Amcrest, even Aqara now offer RTSP and optional local storage. If they can do it, why can’t Google?
All I’m asking for is an optional RTSP stream. Make it a toggle. Secure it. Keep the cloud stuff for folks who want it. Just give power users an option
Let’s make Nest smarter and more open!
