I have been building a smart home gradually for the past 5 years, and now have thirteen speakers of differing sizes, spread across my house, controlling lights and switches from several manufacturers, and a chromecast dongle. I have just become aware of matter. Two questions; can I convert one of my existing devices, like a mini, into a matter hub? If I buy a new device to serve as a matter hub, will it integrate with all the older devices in my house? If my question does not seem well explained, please feedback.

The Nest mini doesn´t work as matter hub. You need at least an Hub 2. Gen

Hi tomasball,
Thanks for posting. I understand that you want to convert a Nest Mini to a matter hub that can help to control your other devices. Let me tell you that this is possible; To control a 3rd-party Matter-enabled device with the Google Home app or Google Assistant, you need a Google device that acts as a hub for Matter:
You can set up, manage, and control Matter-enabled devices with Google Home to organize and control all of your home devices with just one app.
Check the "Prepare your smart home for Matter" article for detailed information.
Please let me know if you have more questions.
Best regards,
Jenny

I have read those articles, and I still don't understand how to update a device to serve as a matter hub.

In that linked articel stands, that the nest mini only works with wlan devices! Matter works via Thread so it can´t work as an hub for matter devices

to follow up, I bought a hub and added it to my home. It can control matter enabled light bulbs, but apparently all the other devices cannot. Is that right?

Hi everyone,
We are sorry to hear that you can't control all your devices with your Hub. In this case, it could be something related to the software compatibility from the third parties. You can contact the manufacturers for further information.
We would appreciate it if you sent feedback about the problem that you are experiencing, and we expect your experience to get better in the future updates.
Best regards,
Jenny

I did NOT say that I can't control all my devices from my Hub. I said that the Hub is the only device that can control matter devices. I had hoped that with the new Hub integrated into my home, other devices connected to the home, like minis, could control matter devices.

Hi tomasball,
Thanks for your reply and the update. I understand that you want to control all the devices with the Nest Mini as well, right? Also, could you please confirm what hub model you have?
Please keep me posted.
Best regards,
Jenny
