"I'm home" under personal automations

I have set up my household (myself Android + wife iPhone) for geofencing under google home automation.

I notice with automations, under "Personal", there is this stock routine called "I'm home" with default starter that is "when I say to my assistant ..."

So I added the 2nd starter that says "when the user arrives at ....", thinking that the routine gets kick started when either I voice out, or when my android arrives at the gps loction.

But it doesn't get kick started, when I arrive at the address.

Side info: wife's iphone is already at home (ie household geofencing status is still "home", not "away")

Something wrong here?

Alex

  • Presence Sensing is a complex issue with Google Home. Too complex in my opinion.
  • Home and Away modes (manual setting in app and H&A automations) and  is different to to the "I'm Home" automation.
  • Under the Activity tab > Events > Presence Sensing... has your phone been triggering location changes?

I find it making sense and working perfectly even on household level, with multiple devices in context.

  • Home and Away modes (manual setting in app and H&A automations) and  is different to to the "I'm Home" automation.

This is what I am expecting too.  While I am expecting Home and Away modes to be on household level, and "I'm home" is for the particular individual device --- this has NOT been the case.  Hence my original question here.

  • Under the Activity tab > Events > Presence Sensing... has your phone been triggering location changes?

Yes, I can see log regarding my device's location change, I can see Home/Away modes changing correctly and triggering relevant household routines correctly.

It's just that I cannot see personal routine kickstarted.

Example

Wife is home and I am away, so on household level, it is still Home mode (which is correct).  Now when I am coming home, Activity>Events reports that my device is home (correct), but "I'm home" doesn't get trigggered.

Hi stickyrice,

Thank you for reaching out to the community. I’m sorry that you’re experiencing troubles with your Home Automation when you arrive at your home. I appreciate the detailed information and the help @SmartHomeH-TAGS. I understand how frustrating it can be. Let’s work together to find a solution.

Some routines can fail to start when switching between Home and Away modes. Please do the following to solve this situation:

  1. Make sure your devices are online.

  2. Check if your Google Home app is up to date.

  3. Check which devices are part of your Home or Away Routines. This may include sensors from Nest devices and phone location from home members.

  4. On your Home App, tap Settings and then Presence Sensing.

  5. A list of devices related to your Home or Away Routines appears.

  6. Add your devices to the correct routine. If they are already added and still have troubles please do the following:

  7. Make sure location services are turned on for your mobile devices.

  8. Check if your account is signed in to multiple devices.

  9. Check if the activity was recorded by the app.

Please let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Byron

Hi @ByronP ,

I was NOT asking about switching between Home and Away modes, which are on household level (I have 2 user devices within this household).  I was asking about routine "I'm Home", under section "Personal", of "Automations".

Please refer to my example with my second post above.  I am repeating it below:

Hope this clarifies my question.

Thanks.

Hi stickyrice,

Thank you for your prompt response. I apologize for the misunderstanding. Let's explore additional options.

A routine may fail to run due to several reasons. Please do the following to find out why your routine didn't start as expected:

  1. Check the Activity feed in your Home app to understand when and how your Routines ran.

    • Open the Home app, tap Activity, and find “Routine started” events.

    • The details should include the time the routine ran, the name of the routine, and what caused the routine to start.

  2. If the details don’t match how you want the routine to run, visit the following to edit your routine’s starters and actions.

  3. If the starters and actions are correct, check if the routine is activated.

    1. Open the Home app, tap Automations, then select the Routine you want to check.

    2. The Activate Routine toggle must be in the on position for the routine to start. If it's grayed out, tap to activate the toggle.

Please let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Byron
