Nest Protect software and steam issues

Fictional_Yeti

Greetings,

About 4 days ago, I replaced 9 of my Kidde smoke detectors with 9 Nest Protect Gen 2, wired. Installation was pretty straightforward and smooth. After setup and Wi-Fi connection, I have experienced 2 issues.

1) A quick search seems to explain that firmware/software gets updated automatically. This has not happened to me as I'm still stuck on Topaz 2.33 Software 3.4.1rc1 - I tried the "Checking the Network" trick and then wait 15 minutes but nothing updates. All alarms are successfully connected to Eero mesh.

2) False alarm - Steam - I have 1 Nest Protect that just gets hammered outside one of my kids bathrooms. If they take a hot shower with the fan on, once they open the door and steam escapes it doesn't even give you the heads up, it just blares the "Smoke Emergency". I read that other tried to reset the device but to me it just seem weird to having to reset factory sealed units from Google after 3 days.

Any ideas? I can't really move this thing as it replaced the old one in the exact same spot? Could some of this new software maybe regulate some of this? If there's nothing I can do, I must just disable this unit for now.

Aside from any possible defects in your Nest Protects, having a smoke detector outside a bathroom is likely to cause false alarms. We don't have Nest Protects, but none of our conventional smoke detectors are near our bathrooms or kitchen.

You are going to have to move it. The Nest Protect does have a steam option, but it's not designed to take on a full blast of steam.

Let me briefly reply back to this topic making sure that future users fully understand my original questions. As I have read 100s of strings on this topic, I do really appreciate the quality of most items on the Nest Protect.

However, the steam feature “should”have a customization feature as “no other” smoke detectors on the market react to the way houses are built within the last 20 years.

There was a previous reply to this string of “you are going to have to move “1 out of 9” because it is within 11 feet of the bathroom is just garbage. Older Kidde and other brands of detectors has been used in this home replaced every 5 years and they “do not” react like the Nest this making me think software updates should be able to customize this. I’m not going to cut into a 13 year old custom built house moving electrical connections for 1 detector in a 2 story home.

The software/firmware mechanism also seems to be very slow updating older software but I will deal with it.
For now, 1 of 9 Nest Protect is simply disconnected and not in use.
